Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has admitted the prospect of Toby Greene playing for the Hawks would be enticing after the club was urged to target the star Giants skipper.

Hawks coach responds to Cornes’ Toby Greene suggestion

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell admits he would love Toby Greene at his club.

But he fully understands the reality of the situation in attempting to lure a star captain away from his current club.

Last week, SEN’s Kane Cornes floated the potential for the Hawks to bring 32-year-old Greene, who is out of contract at season’s end, back to Melbourne for a last tilt at a flag

“You'll continually be on the hunt to improve your list and you like to dodge these questions, but I think Toby Greene is a nice option for free in terms of not giving up anything for him – a couple of years left, I think he serves a purpose for you,” Cornes said.

Matildas Captain Sam Kerr has watched Bend It Like Beckham Many times

It’s a movie that kicks goals in terms of South Asian representation, brown girls in sport and challenging cultural norms. And Matildas captain Sam Kerr seems to be right on board.

When it comes to football references in pop culture, Bend It Like Beckham has remained a fan favourite since its release back in 2002. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, the movie followed British Indian woman Jesminder ‘Jess’ Bhamra’s (Parminder Nagra) plight to pursue professional football, despite her Punjabi parents’ desires for her to focus on her studies and eventually find a nice brown boy to marry.

Whether it was the fancy footwork on the field, the friendship between Jess and Jules (Keira Knightley), the exploration of dual-cultural identity, or the Indian wedding photographer’s hilarious antics (“Eyes down. Don’t smile. Indian bride never smiles. You’ll ruin the bloody video”)… chances are this film resonated with you and made you smile in some way.

Optus Stadium soccer game set to trigger CBD traffic frenzy

Motorists are being warned of disturbances to usual routes on Tuesday night as the Women’s Asian Cup kicks off at Optus Stadium.

The Matildas are set to take on China, with the game kicking off at 6pm, and gates opening at 4.30pm.

Main Roads WA told locals to “expect heavy foot traffic and frequently stopping vehicles in the area,” and also warned of tow away zones.

Rideshare services will be available on Sailani Avenue in East Perth.

A strong crowd is expected at Tuesday night’s semi-final and the Matildas’ game on Friday night at HBF park.

Sam Kerr penned a letter to Matilda’s fans on Monday, thanking them for their support over the tourament.

Nathan Collins is living the kind of football story that young players dream about. At just 24, he wears the captain’s armband for both Brentford and the Republic of Ireland, leading on two fronts in a season that’s been nothing short of remarkable. Nathan Collins: ‘I Know How Hard Andrews Has Worked’ As He Backs Brentford Coach

Brentford defender nathan collins said he was “buzzing” for Keith Andrews after the coach’s promotion to head coach, praising the balance in his man-management and the long path Andrews took to the role.

Collins, who has known Andrews since he was 16 and had him with the Under-17s setup for Ireland, welcomed the coach’s elevation from set-piece coach to head coach. He noted that Andrews’ appointment over the summer drew external scepticism because it was his first senior head coach role, but Collins said that view did not match what he had seen personally. “I have known Keith a long time – since I was 16, ” he said, adding that he was “buzzing for him as I know how hard he has worked. “

England captain Leah Williamson returns for World Cup qualifiers

Leah Williamson became the first England captain to win two major trophies

England captain Leah Williamson returns to the squad for the first time since Euro 2025 as they prepare to begin their 2027 Women's World Cup qualifying campaign.

Williamson, 28, missed England's friendly victories over China, Ghana and Australia as well as their defeat by Brazil at the end of 2025 due to a knee injury.

The Arsenal defender had surgery after lifting England's second successive European title in July and returned to action at the start of December.

"It's really nice to have her back. She's still building but she's in a very good place. I've been in contact with her and with her club," manager Sarina Wiegman told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Williamson back for World Cup qualifiers as Wiegman denies contract is ‘distraction’

Head coach’s deal due to run out after 2027 World Cup

Sarina Wiegman insisted that entering the final 17 months of her contract as England’s head coach was not a distraction, as she named her first squad of 2026 and recalled the fit-again captain, Leah Williamson, for the side’s meetings with Ukraine and Iceland next month.

Williamson’s fellow Euro 2025 winners Hannah Hampton, Alex Greenwood and Lauren James have also been recalled after injuries, along with Jess Carter, who missed England’s final matches of 2025 to recover from the NWSL playoffs. However, the Lionesses are without Ella Toone, Beth Mead, Niamh Charles and Missy Bo Kearns because of injury as the team get their 2027 World Cup qualifying campaign under way.
