Number of children in residential care in Qld jumps to record new highs

The Queensland government has released its response to the child safety inquiry and accepted 32 out of 52 recommendations and accepted in principle a further 16.

It comes as new data shows the number of children in residential care in Queensland has jumped to a new record high of almost 3,000, up from 2,200 last year.

Child Safety Minister Amanda Camm said the new peak was a "line in the sand" and reaffirmed a commitment to remove all children under five from residential care.

Almost 3,000 children were in residential care (resi-care) in Queensland in March, a new record high, and a stark increase from the more than 2,200 recorded in the previous year.

Child safety system ‘broken’, Camm admits, revealing rising number of kids in care

The number of children – including those younger than five – in state care in Queensland has risen, the Child Safety minister has revealed.

Data released by Amanda Camm showed 2819 children were in residential care as of March, up from 2258 compared with the previous year.

The number of children aged four or younger rose from 78 in 2025 to 107.

The minister has been under fire, after claims from opposition MPs late in June that department staff had left children to sleep on the floor at government offices.

While she took a week to address the claims – the deputy premier saying she had been in hospital suffering a migraine – she also had to front media to explain the state’s bungled rollout of its new child safety IT system, Unify.

WA aged care residents to get free RSV vaccine after worst ever flu season

Free RSV vaccines will be offered to older Western Australians in residential aged care. ( ABC News: Brendan Esposito)

After a horror flu season last year, free RSV vaccinations are being rolled out for the first time for older Western Australians living in residential aged care.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly contagious illness that can cause a severe infection in older adults and babies.

Mothers and babies were already entitled to free RSV vaccinations, and on Thursday the state government expanded the program to include those aged 65 and older living in residential aged care.

It feels like every year we're told this is one of the worst flu seasons on record. But this time around, doctors really mean it.

WA aged care homes to get 15,000 free vital vaccines

Around 15,000 free doses of the RSV vaccine are set to be rolled out at WA aged-care homes ahead of winter.

For the first time vaccines for the respiratory syncytial virus will be free for those 65 and over in residential aged care homes through a $2.6 million State-first program.

It mirrors a program introduced last year where the vaccine – which currently costs around $300 to buy – was free for infants and people over 28 weeks pregnant, others considered the most vulnerable in society.

According to the Government, less than one per cent of people over 60 received the vaccine last year.

But about 25 per cent of people over 65 who contracted RSV in 2025 ended up in hospital.

Government Finally Acts on Free RSV Vaccines After Sustained Pressure from the Opposition

Shadow Minister for Aged Care and Member for Warren-Blackwood Bevan Eatts MLA has welcomed the Government’s decision to provide free RSV immunisation for older Western Australians in residential aged care is a welcome step — and one the Opposition has been calling for months.

Mr Eatts said the announcement shows that persistent, practical advocacy can deliver real outcomes for seniors.

“This is a win for common sense — and for the many families and healthcare workers who have raised this issue with me,” Mr Eatts said.

“We have consistently called on the Government to fund free RSV vaccinations for older Western Australians, and today’s announcement shows that when you keep the pressure on and put forward practical solutions, the Government is forced to listen.”

Lomax hires lawyer against Eels in bid to join Storm

Zac Lomax's standoff with the Parramatta Eels has intensified, with the NSW Blues representative engaging high-profile lawyer Ramy Qutami in a bid to secure an unconditional release from his NRL contract and join the Melbourne Storm.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed that Lomax is seeking to overturn the conditional release granted by the Eels in November, which allowed him to pursue opportunities in other sporting codes but explicitly blocked any move to a rival NRL club until his contract expires at the end of 2028.

Lomax agreed to those terms at the time after requesting an early exit just one season into a four-year deal.
