The Boston Celtics are trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks (2028 and 2031) and two second-round picks (2028 and 2030), according to ESPN. The 2028 first-rounder could convert from a first to a pick swap that is more favorable to the Celtics. The 2031 first is unprotected.

The stunning deal marks the end of Brown's enormously successful 10-season run in Boston. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft made five All-Star teams with the Celtics. The team announced the news about 90 minutes before the start of the winner-take-all first-round matchup. The 76ers won 109-100, advancing to challenge the Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

“He just came in today with knee discomfort. The medical team and myself decided for him not to play,” coach Joe Mazzulla said during his pregame meeting with reporters.

QUINCY, Mass. — The New England Free Jacks (0-2-0) fell short to Old Glory DC by just two points, 21-19, in their home opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Fans showed up to support the team with an attendance of 3,200.

Last time the two teams faced off, the Free Jacks came up short by just three points, and coming in, Old Glory had won three out of the four games against New England.

Captain Joe Johnston, who played the match with broken bones in his right hand, spoke to the loss, saying that the team may need a little bit more time before they are able to stand out in the league.

BOSTON — — Neemias Queta scored a career-high 27 points and added 17 rebounds to help the Boston Celtics recover from a slow start and rally to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114-98 on Sunday night.

Jaylen Brown added 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and Derrick White finished with 21 points and eight assists as the Celtics became the fourth team to reach 40 victories. They have won six of seven.

It was the 11th double-double of the season for Queta, who also had three blocks. He has three double-doubles — with at least two blocks in each — over his last five games.

Philadelphia cut what was a 16-point lead by Boston in the second half to 103-97 with just over four minutes to play. But Queta scored Boston’s next eight points to put the Celtics in front 111-98 and help close it out.

Celtics starting center Neemias Queta recently detailed his journey as the NBA’s first (and only) player from Portugal in an interview with Marc J. Spears of Andscape. Queta’s parents moved to Portugal from their native Guinea-Bissau due to the civil war that took place in the West African country in the late 1990s, Spears writes.

Queta has never been to Guinea-Bissau or to Africa, but he hopes to visit his parents’ home country with his mother “in the next couple of years.”

“They were in kind of like a refugee type of situation. It was more trying to get to that safe place and Port Portugal welcomed them,” Queta said.

LOS ANGELES — The Celtics and Lakers will meet 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, renewing one of the NBA’s oldest rivalries. This year’s edition got an extra boost from the NBA compared to the past.

First and foremost, both teams are expected to be at full strength. The Lakers will feature their stars like LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, plus former C’s guard Marcus Smart is good to play.
