John Cena announces WWE return for WrestleMania 42. Here's what he'll do

John Cena may have retired from WWE in December last year, but the 17-time champion has found a new way to stay involved with the company without having to get in the ring.

Cena announced via social media that he will play host of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas this year.

The announcement comes less than a month after Cena stirred the rumor mill after hinting that he'd found a way to contribute to WWE following his retirement. Now, the truth is clear. Cena's hosting role gives him an opportunity to remain involved with WWE even after his farewell tour with the company last year.

John Cena Teases WrestleMania Return After Retirement

Nearly two years after John Cena retired from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) following 20 years as one of its biggest stars, he will return to host WrestleMania in April.

John Cena is returning to the ring—just not in the way his fans are used to.

Nearly two years after confirming his retirement from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the 48-year-old confirmed he will host the two-day WrestleMania 42 event in Las Vegas April 18.

“Ah, retired life in the sun,” John teased in a March 30 video shared to X, taken on set. “I’m kidding—check out the backdrop. I’m shooting a movie for Netflix called One Attempt Remaining that you can see when it comes out.”

Update on John Cena vs. Gunther at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event

John Cena will have all the time he wants at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Our own Bryan Alvarez wrote to his subscribers on X that with Cena vs. Gunther scheduled to open the show, and the event having no set runtime, Cena will have as much time as he needs.

“At this point, there is no set runtime for Saturday Night’s Main Event, so everyone will get all the time they need. Cena vs. Gunther is currently scheduled to open the show and Cena will get as much time as he wants.”

Dave Meltzer also addressed Cena vs. Gunther opening the show in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, noting that since the show is airing only on Peacock in the United States, and not NBC, they are not confined to a hard out at 10 p.m. Eastern, as they were for Goldberg’s retirement match in July.
