    CFMEU organiser urinated on worksite floor, inquiry hears

    A major contractor has detailed to a commission of inquiry into the CFMEU a series of incidents when union officials accessed worksites without authorisation, refused to leave, and disrupted works.

    Contractor on the Coomera Connector Timothy Ellis told the inquiry on one occasion organiser Luke Gibson urinated on a worksite floor amid a dispute over plumbing standards.

    The commission of inquiry was set to finish this month, but was recently given an extension until December, 2027.

    A CFMEU official urinated on the bathroom floor at a Gold Coast worksite in front of site management to prove a point, Queensland’s commission of inquiry into the union has heard.

    Tim Ellis, the workplace health and safety manager at civil construction firm JF Hull Holdings, told the inquiry on Tuesday CFMEU organiser Luke Gibson deliberately urinated on the floor of a newly constructed toilet block at a Coomera Connector stage one site at Helensvale.

    Ellis said cleaners had to be brought in to clean up the mess after Gibson’s alleged act, during which two employees – project superintendent Scott Holmberg and safety manager Justin O’Neill – and Electrical Trades Union organiser Stephen Bravo were also present.

    Mark Irving KC — who was appointed administrator of the CFMEU in 2024 amid revelations of widespread corruption, criminality and violence — has tendered his resignation.

    He commissioned multiple investigations into the union, removed hundreds from their positions and has received death threats.

    The ongoing commission of inquiry into the CFMEU in Queensland resumes this week.

    The senior barrister appointed to clean up Australia's scandal-plagued construction union has resigned, after leading it through what the administration has called "the most challenging period in the union's recent history".

    Mark Irving KC was appointed as administrator of the CFMEU in August 2024 amid revelations of widespread corruption, criminality and violence within the institution.

    The senior barrister appointed to clean up the corruption and crime-tainted CFMEU, Mark Irving, has quit in a major challenge to the Albanese government’s attempts to reform the sector.

    His departure comes two months after he launched an internal investigation into the treatment of two women by his former second-in-charge, national secretary Zach Smith, whose own sudden resignation from the CFMEU in January came amid serious disclosures from the two women.

    Irving’s resignation as administrator is the most serious challenge to face Labor’s reform plan for the scandal-ridden union while fending off opposition calls for the CFMEU’s deregistration or a royal commission, including into the union’s abuse of its power on taxpayer-funded building sites across the nation.

    Official in charge of CFMEU clean-up quits in shock move

    The head of the CFMEU administration has quit more than 12 months early in another major setback to the Albanese government’s efforts to clean up corruption and organised crime in the construction industry.

    Barrister Mark Irving, KC, has stepped back from his role as national administrator of the CFMEU about 18 months into his three-year term and he will formally quit in June, ahead of a critical rebuilding stage.

    Queensland’s key civil construction union raised concerns with former Labor ministers and public servants about the legality of major infrastructure procurement policies, an inquiry has heard.

    Australian Workers’ Union state secretary Stacey Schinnerl also identified the previously unnamed CFMEU official who had a close personal relationship with a regulator’s employee.

    And Schinnerl revealed a planned, and funded, attempt by the CFMEU to take control of her union at a future election amid national efforts to push into the civil construction sector.

    TOM HARTLEY:  That clash was the culmination of years of tension between the CFMEU and Australian Workers Union.  This week, that rivalry – that “turf war” – dominated the second sitting of the Commission of Inquiry.

    The administrator of the CFMEU, who took control of all of the union's construction branches in 2024 due to allegations of corruption, has given evidence to a Queensland inquiry.

    Mark Irving KC told the hearing the alleged violence within the CFMEU was a "cancer" and that he planned to terminate the membership of prominent members.

    Commissioner Stuart Wood KC is due to deliver his final report to the Queensland government in July next year.

    The CFMEU administrator has revealed plans to expel ousted Queensland, Victorian and New South Wales leaders, describing alleged violence within the powerful union as a "cancer".

    CFMEU administrator Mark Irving is now taking the inquiry through the actions the union has been taking under his control in working with other unions, employer groups and some governments.This has included monthly meetings with the Master Builders Association, major contractors and subcontractor groups – though he says this hasn’t played out quite the same way in Queensland.Irving says the union in Queensland stands ready and willing to engage and “move forward to a new relationship” that is available to “all of the states who wish to participate”.When questioned by his counsel, Chris O’Grady, about the idea of deregistering the union, Irving says such action would lead to “chaos” and was opposed by major employers.
