'Generational change': Melissa Donnelly named as new ACTU boss

Public Sector Union boss Melissa Donnelly will take the helm of the Australian Council of Trade Unions at the end of August.

It comes after former peak union body secretary Sally McManus and president Michele O'Neil announced their resignation late last month.

Ms Donnelly says the cost of living and the AI boom will be her priorities when she starts at the end of August.

The new boss of Australia's biggest union is confronting a question that is increasingly worrying workers: not just whether AI will take their jobs, but if any jobs will be left for their children.

Melissa Donnelly, the national secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union, will take on the role as the next head of the trade movement in Australia, after the resignation of Sally McManus.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions’ secretary and its president, Michele O’Neil, revealed last month they would be stepping down after eight years together as the first all-female leadership team in the ACTU’s 99-year history, playing a major role in shaping the Albanese government’s workplace agenda.

NORTH Melbourne impressed with a spirited showing in a rare primetime slot, but was left to rue not quite mastering the big moments against the battle-hardened Collingwood.

The Roos' third single-figure defeat this year will make it hard for them to snatch a finals spot with a horror run home that includes games against three current top-six sides as well as Geelong, beginning with Melbourne.

Melbourne continued its flawless run at the MCG as it brushed aside Richmond for a ninth straight victory at the venue this season.

The Demons still have little margin for error in the race for a top-six finish with a tricky run home that begins with the improving Kangaroos at their preferred venue, and includes the Cats, Fremantle and Western Bulldogs, as well as Gold Coast and Port Adelaide both on the road.

Carr on opportunity, midfield balance and O’Brien debut

Port Adelaide senior coach Josh Carr said the opportunity for his young side against the best team in the competition is something they’re looking forward to.

With six changes to the team ahead of Saturday’s Fremantle clash, Carr has added 19-year-old debutant Balyn O’Brien to the side.

Live: Port forced into last-minute line-up switch ahead of Dockers clash

The 'dockside derby' between Port Adelaide and Fremantle kicks off a big Saturday of football ahead of tonight's clash of old rivals Collingwood and Carlton.

The injury-hit Power are all but out of finals contention, but they could put a small dent in the Dockers' run to the minor premiership with a win at Adelaide Oval.

Tonight, the Blues will need a win over the Magpies at the MCG to stay in touch with the top-10. The late game in Perth sees West Coast host Brisbane.

That was a third quarter befitting of the AFL's ladder leaders!

The Dockers slammed on 6.2 to Port's 1.1 for the quarter to turn a 12-point half-time deficit into a 19-point three-quarter time lead.

The Albanese government has announced it will roll out digital passenger cards to all Australian international airports and seaports after a “successful” trial on Qantas flights into Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

The paper forms, which ask passengers arriving in Australia for personal information and to declare any food, plant or animal products, have long been an annoyance for travellers arriving on long-haul flights.

Collingwood has named one changes for Friday night’s Round 18 clash with the North Melbourne Kangaroos at Marvel Stadium.

V/AFL games record-holder Scott Pendlebury is set to return to the team after he was a late out with calf awareness last week against the Gold Coast SUNS.

It will be the midfielder’s 12th appearance of 2026, taking his overall tally to 437 AFL games.

Forward Harvey Harrison is set for a week on the sidelines as the 22-year-old will be managed for the clash.

He’s joined in the line-up by fellow AFL-listed trio Callum Coleman-Jones, Wil Dawson and Luke Urquhart, as well as former AFL players Darcy Macpherson and Lachie Gollant.

Zac Banch, Riley Hardeman and Matt Whitlock have all been named in the AFL team for Friday night’s match, while Tom Powell has succumbed to injury again.

Financial markets have now priced in a slightly lower chance of a Reserve Bank interest rate hike next month.

The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.5 per cent in April, up from 4.3 per cent in March, according to the Bureau of Statistics.

The number of employed people fell by 18,600 in April, while the number of unemployed people rose by 33,000.

The number of unemployed people looking for full-time work increased by 11,000, and unemployed people looking for part-time work increased by 22,000.

Economy crunched as unemployment hits highest level since pandemic

High interest rates, cost-of-living pressures and the war against Iran may have pushed the Australian economy into a downturn after new figures showed unemployment jumping to its highest level since the depths of the pandemic.

Expectations of further interest rate rises by the Reserve Bank this year dropped sharply after the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported the jobless rate hit 4.5 per cent in April, following a fall of 18,600 in the number of people with a job.

The epicentre of the job losses was the nation’s biggest economy, NSW, with the state shedding 44,000 positions last month, while those groups most likely to be axed first by businesses at the start of downturn, young people and women, also suffered job losses.

Youth job losses push unemployment rate to 4.5pc

Job losses among younger Australians have pushed up the unemployment rate to an almost five-year high of 4.5 per cent, giving the Reserve Bank of Australia room to leave interest rates unchanged at its next meeting.

The total number of people employed fell for the first time this year, driven by 56,400 fewer people aged 15 to 24 years old working in April. Youth unemployment is now at 11.1 per cent, the highest since October 2021.
