Four Corners investigates claims that financial pressures are being used to justify sweeping restructures, while staff and students are left to bear the consequences. (Four Corners)

JASON CLARE, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION: "Anybody who thinks that we don't have a governance problem with our universities is living under a rock."

STEVE CANNANE: As public funding has declined, universities have become increasingly corporatised.

FIONA PROBYN-RAPSEY, FORMER PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG : "We have all these finance and business experts on university councils now, but our finances seem to be getting worse. How's that?"

ELLA HAID, STUDENT, UTS: "I try not to check my student debt, but every time I do, I can't help but think how it's being used."

The Stats Guy: I dreamed I was running a uni. Here’s what I changed

The four fundamental changes that would set Australian universities up for the challenges ahead and the needs of society, according to Simon Kuestenmacher.

I had a strange dream the other night. I woke up as the chancellor of a large Australian university.

Tens of thousands of students. Billions in revenue. A sprawling campus and an even more sprawling set of problems.

So I did what any demographer would do. I went straight to the numbers.

Australian universities are no longer just places of learning, they are complex financial machines. At many large institutions, more than half of all revenue is tied to students. And within that, international students often provide the single biggest marginal dollar.

Inside the university shake up gripping campuses on FOUR CORNERS

Reporter Steve Cannane examines the factors behind the shift, including funding challenges, rising debt and the impact on staff and students across campuses nationwide.

Australian universities are in turmoil. Deep cuts to jobs and courses are triggering fury on campuses across the country.

This week on Four Corners, reporter Steve Cannane investigates how years of shrinking public funding, rising debt and increasingly corporate decision making have pushed some of the nation’s most important public institutions to breaking point.

Campus Chaos reveals the scale of spending on outside consultants and asks what that means for transparency, accountability and the future of higher education.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — An explosion and large plume of smoke at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur prompted officials to order west-side residents to shelter in place, while nearby Nederland reported no impact from the incident Monday.

The shelter-in-place was issued for the west side of Port Arthur from Stilwell West to South of 73. Pleasure Island and Sabine Pass are included in the shelter-in-place.

Antonio Mitchell with the Port Arthur Fire Department confirmed an incident at the Valero facility.

"The type of incident is unknown at this time," Mitchell said not long after the explosion as his crews headed to the scene.

Formula One chiefs are among sports leaders "closely monitoring" the conflict in the Middle East ahead of the season's opening grand prix in Australia next week and upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Cricket and soccer organisations are also keeping a close eye on developments as missile strikes continued to rock the region on Saturday after US and Israeli forces attacked Iran, with Iranian retaliatory attacks reported in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and elsewhere.

Formula One's European-based teams were set to be heading to Melbourne for next weekend's season-opener via the Middle East, meaning an overhaul to their flights.

Update January 29: Apple has pinpointed the bug responsible for the issue, and a carrier update has been delivered to affected phones. iOS 16.7.13 remains unavailable for download, but the other updates have resumed.

It’s been a big week for iOS. On Monday, Apple rolled out iOS 26.2.1, the latest point update for the current version. Then it surprised everyone by also releasing new versions of iOS 18, iOS 16, iOS 15, and even (for the first time since 2023) iOS 12. These updates to older versions of iOS appear to have been designed primarily to allow iMessage and FaceTime to keep working on older iPhones beyond January 2027, when the certificate would otherwise have expired.

Apple Stops Signing Newly Released iOS Updates for Older iPhones [Updated]

Apple has stopped signing several iOS updates released earlier this week, preventing users from installing them even if they still appear in Software Update. The affected versions include iOS 12, iOS 15, iOS 16, and iOS 18.

On Monday, Apple released iOS 18.7.4, iOS 16.7.13, iOS 15.8.6, and iOS 12.5.8 for older iPhone models, along with iPadOS 15.8.6, iPadOS 16.7.3, and iPadOS 18.7.4 for iPad models.

The updates were intended to keep core system services functioning on devices that no longer receive major iOS releases, as well as fix an issue preventing some devices from being able to make emergency calls. Affected iPhone models include the following:

None of the updates address security vulnerabilities or introduce new features. According to Apple's release notes for the iOS 12 and iOS 15 updates, the main purpose is to replace an expiring security certificate. Without that replacement, services such as iMessage, FaceTime, and Apple Account sign-in would stop working after January 2027, when the original certificate expires.

‘Chaos’: Behind the Scenes of Amazon’s Melania Trump Doc

On Saturday, the same day that an ICE agent shot and killed ICU nurse Alex Pretti as he was restrained, face first on ground in Minneapolis, a few dozen VIPs — including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Queen Rania of Jordan, and former heavy-weight champion Mike Tyson — gathered at the White House for a lavish party, complete with custom-made popcorn buckets and gift boxes emblazoned with the first lady’s portrait, to celebrate the forthcoming documentary Melania: Twenty Days to History.

The private sneak peek screening was held ahead of the Brett Ratner-directed film’s world premiere, slated to take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. The fine print along the bottom of an invitation to the premiere reads: “If you are a government employee or a government official, by accepting this invitation you are confirming that you have received approval from your ethics officer or legal department to attend this event and accept any provided items.”

Sydney Airport in chaos as air traffic staff shortages hits flights

Dozens of flights at the country’s busiest airport have been cancelled on Thursday in the worst disruption to air travel since the pandemic, as an acute shortage of air traffic control staff created havoc for Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Many other flights were delayed, with some aircraft forced to wait on the tarmac at Sydney Airport for two hours, issues that Airservices Australia, which runs air traffic control, blamed on a smaller team.

Dozens of domestic flights at Sydney Airport are cancelled and several others will face hours-long delays because of a shortage of air traffic control staff.

About 30 Qantas and Jetstar flights have been axed, while Virgin also expects cancellations, as Airservices Australia implements “spacing intervals” for flights arriving and departing Sydney to safely manage operations on Thursday.
