Number of children in residential care in Qld jumps to record new highs

The Queensland government has released its response to the child safety inquiry and accepted 32 out of 52 recommendations and accepted in principle a further 16.

It comes as new data shows the number of children in residential care in Queensland has jumped to a new record high of almost 3,000, up from 2,200 last year.

Child Safety Minister Amanda Camm said the new peak was a "line in the sand" and reaffirmed a commitment to remove all children under five from residential care.

Almost 3,000 children were in residential care (resi-care) in Queensland in March, a new record high, and a stark increase from the more than 2,200 recorded in the previous year.

Child safety system ‘broken’, Camm admits, revealing rising number of kids in care

The number of children – including those younger than five – in state care in Queensland has risen, the Child Safety minister has revealed.

Data released by Amanda Camm showed 2819 children were in residential care as of March, up from 2258 compared with the previous year.

The number of children aged four or younger rose from 78 in 2025 to 107.

The minister has been under fire, after claims from opposition MPs late in June that department staff had left children to sleep on the floor at government offices.

While she took a week to address the claims – the deputy premier saying she had been in hospital suffering a migraine – she also had to front media to explain the state’s bungled rollout of its new child safety IT system, Unify.

Harry and Meghan to bring children to UK next month

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to bring their two children to the UK in July, BBC News understands.

Prince Harry and Meghan will be accompanied by Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. Next month will be one year to the start of the Invictus Games.

It will be the first time the duke, who lives in California, has visited the UK with his family in four years.

Over the past decade across Coalition and Labor governments, childcare has become way more expensive for taxpayers and no cheaper for parents, while there is no clear evidence of improved outcomes for children, and also parents overwhelmingly aren't happy with the available options.

Direct payments or childcare subsidies? New policy proposal reignites debate about parental choice and affordability

The discussion follows commentary published by the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS), which questioned whether direct financial support for families may provide greater flexibility and value than continued increases in childcare subsidy funding. The article suggested that a payment of approximately $9,000 per child could offer families more freedom to determine how they balance care, work and family responsibilities.

While the proposal is unlikely to gain universal support across the sector, it has again highlighted long-running questions about how governments fund early childhood education and care (ECEC), and whether current settings are achieving the outcomes policymakers intend.

The debate comes at a time when childcare affordability remains a significant concern for many Australian families.

‘Danny Go!’ Children’s YouTuber Announces His Son Has Died After Cancer Battle: ‘I Love You Forever’

Daniel Coleman, the creator and host of the popular children’s YouTube series Danny Go!, has revealed that his son, Isaac Coleman, passed away after battling cancer.

On Friday, May 22, Daniel took to Instagram to announce the devastating news that Isaac died on Thursday, May 21. He posted a headshot of Issac and a photo of him holding Isaac, and wrote an emotional tribute to his son in the caption.

“Oh my sweet boy. There’s so much I want to say, but I don’t know how yet,” Daniel wrote. “I already miss you so much, and the pain in my heart is far more than I can process. But looking through thousands of pictures and videos this past week, I’m also filled with tremendous pride.”

'Danny Go!' star Daniel Coleman announces death of 14-year-old son

Child entertainment star Daniel Coleman, also known as Danny Go, has made a somber announcement.

In an Instagram post made on Friday, May 22, Coleman shared that his 14-year-old son Isaac died on Thursday, May 21 after a battle with stage 3 mouth cancer.

"Oh my sweet boy. There’s so much I want to say, but I don’t know how yet. I already miss you so much, and the pain in my heart is far more than I can process," Coleman wrote in his post. "But looking through thousands of pictures and videos this past week, I’m also filled with tremendous pride. Your 14 years were full of so many challenges, but you met them all with such grit … and you somehow kept your trademark joy in spite of it all. You truly had a spark like no other, Isaac! Remembering how loved you were and how full of life your time here was gives me great comfort. Being your dad was the honor of a lifetime. I’m so proud of you and I love you forever. Rest peacefully, son."

We are so sorry for their loss and are thinking about their son’s amazing joy and their immense pride.”

Families hope to meet ‘ISIS brides’ at airport as police plan arrests

The father of Janai Safar, one of the so-called “ISIS brides” returning to Australia, is expected to be at Sydney Airport to try to greet his daughter amid expectations she will be arrested by police soon after touching down on Thursday evening.

Safar, who previously vowed not to return to Australia, will arrive in Sydney with her nine-year-old son, who was born in Syria and has spent his entire life living in Islamic State-controlled territory or Syrian detention camps.

A separate family group of three women and eight children, including grandmother Kawsar Abbas and daughters Zahra and Zeinab Ahmed, will arrive in Melbourne on Thursday evening after transiting through Doha.
