The device was brought ashore at Gili Trawangan in the Lombok Strait after being discovered by a fisherman. (AFP)

A large torpedo-shaped device was found last week by a fisherman near an island in the Lombok Strait, a strategically important sea lane linking Australia to the South China Sea.

It has been identified as a Chinese undersea monitoring system designed to be moored to an anchor on the sea floor while sending data home via communication buoys deployed to the surface.

Beijing has dismissed concerns while Jakarta says examination of the device is continuing.

A large torpedo-shaped device discovered near an island in a strategically important strait between Bali and Lombok has been identified by defence analysts as a Chinese undersea monitoring system.

No flag, no crew, no rights – what Indonesia can legally do about the Lombok drone

A torpedo-like object found off Lombok may not qualify as a “ship”, challenging categories that weren’t designed for unmanned vessels.

Indonesian fishers found a torpedo-like object in the waters north of Gili Trawangan, Lombok, on 6 April. The exact coordinates of the discovery and the object’s direction of travel are unknown. Much else remains speculative: whether it was moving within Indonesia’s archipelagic sea lane (ALKI II) in the Lombok Strait or outside it, what activity it was conducting, and whether the object is attributable to a state.

Speculation persists that the object is an unmanned underwater drone linked to a Chinese company. The investigation continues.

Charles Leclerc, the only other driver to finish within a second of Russell, finished fifth after he ran through the gravel at the final corner.

India’s remarkable Women's Asian Cup chance boosted by cricket team across town | Mrinal Asija

Blue Tigresses have overcome off-field chaos and crises to make this tournament and can look to their women’s cricketers for hope

The Indian women’s football team’s quest for history got off to a bittersweet start in Perth on Wednesday. The players had put aside the off-field turbulence they faced in the lead-up to put up a strong fight on the field, only to concede an injury time goal and go down 1-2 to Vietnam.

Despite the result, the game was significant as a marker of how far the Blue Tigresses had come and where they could go, but also for the atmosphere they were greeted with at the Perth Rectangular Stadium.

Chinese skiing superstar Eileen Gu says she is "disappointed" and "saddened" that Winter Olympics organisers scheduled halfpipe training at the same time as her big air final at the MIlano Cortina Games.

Gu is competing in women's freeski slopestyle, big air and halfpipe and said she "should not be penalised" for "daring to be the only woman to compete in three events".

"I have asked for fair options like joining one training with the snowboarders, or getting even one hour alone to train, but to no avail," she wrote on Instagram.

LIVIGNO, Italy — Defending gold medalist Eileen Gu qualified for the women's big air final in freestyle skiing at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Saturday night, shaking off a fall and landing her last jump.

Gu nailed her first jump but then crashed on her second run, making it essential for her to stay upright on her third and final attempt.

In qualifying, skiers must land two jumps, and the scores from those are combined to determine their position. The top 12 riders advanced to Monday's final.

China 0-4 Japan Live Score, AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Final: Samurai Blue Claim Back-To-Back Titles

The final whistle is blown and Japan are champions again! The Samurai Blue become the first team in AFC U23 Asian Cup history to clinch back-to-back titles, capping their defence with a superlative 4-0 victory over China. Spare a thought for the Dragon Team too, however, who were outclassed in the final but had already created history by advancing past the group stage for the first time in the competition.

The party continues for Japan. Kosei Ogura nets his second goal of the night to put the Samurai Blue 4-0 up, and surely seal their victory in the 76th minute. This is already the highest number of goals scored in a final of the AFC U23 Asian Cup, and would be the largest margin of victory if the scoreline stays this way.

Chinese buyers dominate foreign-owned property, new data reveals

Chinese investors are the dominant group of the more than 40,000 Aussie properties on the Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets for residential land.

A whopping 67 per cent of the more than 40,000 Australian residential properties registered as foreign owned are linked to buyers from China.

It comes as experts have revealed how international investors are changing their approach to minimise government surcharges.

The Australian Taxation Office’s Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets residential list tracks homes bought from 2016 to 2024, most under the supervision of the Foreign Investment Review Board, that are still owned by international interests.

Chinese buyers snap up lion’s share of foreign-owned Aussie homes

Chinese buyers account for a whopping 67% of the more than 40,000 Australian residential properties registered as foreign owned, new Australian Taxation Office (ATO) data reveals.

The ATO’s Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets tracks homes bought from 2016 to 2024, mostly under Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) supervision, that remain in offshore hands. Mainland Chinese investors are the dominant force among buyers from 135 countries, with 23,550 properties – or more than 27,000 when combined with Hong Kong, The Herald Sun reported.

The data lands amid some of the toughest foreign investment settings in years, with most foreign buyers facing a temporary nationwide ban on purchasing established homes from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027 and surcharges commonly adding 7%–9% to non‑resident purchases, leaving many paying 15%–25% more upfront than locals.
