    Tech promises smooth sailing in Fremantle waters

    Fremantle’s debut as a sailing grand prix venue is expected to have ongoing benefits for other water users.

    The Oracle Sail Grand Prix will make its Fremantle debut from January 17 to 18, launching the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship season.

    Just metres from the shore of Bathers Beach, national teams will race identical 50-foot catamarans at speeds topping 100km/h.

    Detailed three-dimensional mapping of the seabed off Fremantle has been held ahead of the event to make it safer for competitors and officials.

    As part of the formal approval process for SailGP, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure considered a range of issues, including safety risks above and below the waterline prior to its endorsement of the event.
