Polls close in Clacton byelection where Nigel Farage faces slew of fringe candidates

Longest ballot in UK voting history features likes of Count Binface and Howling Laud Hope alongside Reform leader

Polls have closed in Clacton, where thousands of residents in the Essex seat voted in a ballot featuring Nigel Farage and a range of novelty and fringe candidates led by Count Binface.

The Reform UK leader resigned as the MP for Clacton at the start of July and forced a byelection in an attempt to address complaints over a deepening scandal about gifts he received.

He is expected to face a formal investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog, which was opened in May after the Guardian revealed he had received a £5m personal gift from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based crypto billionaire, in April 2024.

Voting has closed in a by-election in Britain's Clacton constituency after Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned amid scrutiny of a $9 million donation from a crypto billionaire.

Mr Farage is widely expected to win the seat, but his main opponent is a comedian wearing a bin on his head named Count Binface.

The wait for a result is expected to take several hours, in part because of the complexities of counting votes for a whopping 34 candidates.

Polls have closed in a by-election in the British constituency of Clacton where Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is hoping to regain his parliamentary seat.

Waleed Aly:The salvation of democracy is a joke. Why Binface was absurdly appealing next to Farage

By the time you get around to reading this, there’s a good chance Nigel Farage will have won or will be about to win the Clacton byelection. If so, he will have seen off the intergalactic threat of Count Binface, a serial candidate with a bin on his head, who claims to be an alien space warrior from Sigma IX. Thus closes a circus of a chapter in British politics whose meaning, for now, is strangely ambiguous. I’ve spent much of this campaign trying to figure out if Binface represents the salvation of democracy or its nadir. Now it has concluded, I wonder if my confusion stems from the fact that I was asking a question Binface had no interest in answering.

The London-headquartered HSBC is closing all Australian branches over the next 18 months after selling its local mortgage and personal loan portfolio to the global asset giant Blackstone.

The transaction will end HSBC’s decades-long retail presence in Australia, although it will continue to operate private and institutional banking services, the company announced on Friday.

HSBC has 19 Australian branches, which will close in a “phased manner”, a spokesperson told Guardian Australia.

The bank representative said it was too soon to share details about job losses, given that the sale is subject to regulatory approval. The bank would need the majority of its retail banking team during the winding down period, the spokesperson said.

HSBC quits Aussie retail banking after nearly 40 years

All HSBC bank branches in Australia are set to close following the sale of its $36 billion mortgage and personal loan book to US financier Blackstone.

The banking giant announced on Friday it had reached an agreement to offload the portfolio, with non-bank lender Pepper Money set to manage the loans once the deal is complete.

Licensed since Paul Keating opened the market in 1986, HSBC has announced it will exit Australian retail banking. AP

The transaction, valued at about $36 billion, is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.

HSBC said customers don’t need to take any action right now, with more updates to come as the transition gets underway.

Liverpool or Arsenal – Who will win the race to sign PSG's Bradley Barcola this summer?

Two ambitious Premier League giants. Two Basque managers. And a similar gaping hole in both team's attacks. Both Liverpool and champions Arsenal are on the hunt for a top winger this summer transfer window. For the Anfield side, club legend Mohamed Salah has moved on and they need a new superstar to lead their attack and get back to fighting at the top after last season's meagre title defence. For the Gunners, they can't standstill after finally winning the league and the most obvious area of deficiency in their starting line up is on the left wing. Step forward Bradley Barcola.

Robertson close to Spurs move after Liverpool exit

Tottenham would be Robertson's third club in England after spells at Hull City and Liverpool

Tottenham are close to agreeing a deal with Scotland full-back Andy Robertson following his departure from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old played his final match for Liverpool against Brentford on Sunday, having announced he would leave the club when his contract ends this summer.

Details remain to be finalised on the deal with Spurs but an agreement is in place in principle.

Tottenham, then managed by Thomas Frank, targeted Robertson during the January transfer window.

A deal was agreed between the two clubs, only for Liverpool to pull out when they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

Andy Robertson agrees Tottenham move after snubbing Juventus interest

Tottenham have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign left-back Andy Robertson when his Liverpool contract expires ahead of next season. The Scotland captain departs Anfield after nine highly successful years, choosing to remain in the Premier League with Spurs after Roberto De Zerbi saved them from relegation to the Championship.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have won the race for Robertson's signature. Spurs had previously attempted to secure the left-back in January, but the deal collapsed when Liverpool failed to recruit an immediate replacement. Now, following the conclusion of the season and his emotional farewell during a 1-1 draw with Brentford on Sunday, the 32-year-old is set to join De Zerbi's squad in north London.

Romano: Andy Robertson reaches full agreement with Spurs

Well, this one has been in the works for a while and according to Fabrizio Romano, it’s a done deal — Andrew Robertson will be signing with Tottenham Hotspur momentarily after reaching full agreement on personal terms with the club. Robertson, a Scotland international fullback, is leaving Liverpool upon the expiration of his contract and will sign with Spurs on a free transfer.

Robertson is a good player and will probably be competing with Destiny Udogie next season at left back, but the real thing he brings to Spurs, according to all the previous reports, are things like experience and leadership and capability. All good things, to be fair! Robertson has lost a step from his peak years at Liverpool and that’s a little scary, but the one thing he does know how to do is pick out a good pass, and that’s something Spurs really really really need.

A close friend of a Perth father who died in a shark attack on Saturday says there was no warning before his death.

Liam Thomas was friends with the late Steven Mattaboni, and thanked rescue teams for doing everything they could.

Mr Thomas wants Mr Mattaboni to be remembered as a man who loved the ocean and his family, as his loved ones remain "absolutely heartbroken".

A close friend of a Perth father killed in a shark attack off Rottnest Island says there was “absolutely no warning” before the experienced spearfisher was bitten while diving with friends.

Rottnest Island shark attack: Australian victim identified as father-of-two

Tributes have flowed for an Australian father-of-two who was killed after a shark attack on Saturday in Western Australia (WA).

Steven Mattaboni, 38, was attacked by a 4m (13ft) shark around 10:00 local time at Horseshoe Reef, north-west of the popular Rottnest Island near Perth.

He was spearfishing with friends about 1km offshore when he was bitten on the lower leg in what police described as a "horrific" attack. His friends rushed him back to shore but emergency services were not able to revive him.

His wife, Shirene Mattaboni, described him as an "incredible father" to the couple's two young daughters, saying he was an "avid fisherman" who "lived and breathed the ocean".

Mystery $100k gift helps devastated shark victim’s family

An anonymous $100,000 donation made this morning has supercharged support for the shattered family of Rottnest shark attack victim Steven Mattaboni, with more than $317,660 now raised towards the $500,000 target.

The massive contribution came as dozens of others dug deep, with several donors chipping in between $1000 and $3000, while another person donated a generous $10,000 to help support the young family left behind.

The flood of donations has poured in for Mr Mattaboni’s wife Shirene and the couple’s two young daughters after the 38-year-old father was killed in a horror shark attack off Rottnest Island on Saturday.

Mr Mattaboni was spearfishing with friends near Horseshoe Reef, about 1km north-west of Rottnest, when he was attacked in the water.

Swatch stores close for second day in Liverpool and Manchester

Swatch stores in Manchester and Liverpool were shut for a second day after queues built up again, with shoppers keen to buy a new £335 pocket watch.

They were first closed by the Swiss firm on Saturday "due to safety considerations", along with its shops in Birmingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Cardiff and London.

In a social media post after crowds gathered at branches worldwide, Swatch asked people "not to rush to our stores in large numbers" and said the items – which have been resold online for up to £16,000 – would "remain available for several months".

Some have criticised the company, saying the watches should be available on its website and police resources had been unnecessarily diverted.

‘It was like a mosh pit’: Swatch closes stores as watch launch causes crowding and scuffles

Paris police used teargas on Saturday and UK shops stayed shut on Sunday after rush for Royal Pop timepieces

Swatch closed its stores in the UK and in some cities in Europe and the US at the weekend after the launch of a limited-edition watch caused chaos.

Shoppers waited throughout the night, and in some cases for several days, hoping to buy the Royal Pop timepieces – made in collaboration with the luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet – on Saturday.

But police were called when huge crowds descended on stores in Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

A dispersal order was put in place in Birmingham, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Cardiff and issued with a Section 35 dispersal notice, and police dogs were deployed at the Battersea power station and Westfield shopping centres in London to tackle the chaos.

Polls put seat in three-way dead heat with Labour facing threats from Reform and Green party in once safe seat

The Gorton and Denton byelection is the biggest electoral test yet for Keir Starmer before what are expected to be disastrous results for Labour in the May local elections. Polls put the race in a three-way dead heat, making it nearly impossible to call.

The vote is particularly symbolic because of the threat Labour faces from Reform UK and the Green party in a once safe seat. Should Labour lose, it will put the spotlight back on Starmer’s decision to block Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, from contesting the seat.

A seemingly standard by-election in the UK could serve as a make or break moment for Britain's prime minister Keir Starmer.

His premiership has been under immense pressure amid the rising appeal of populist leaders on the left and right wings of British politics as well as from within his own Labor party.

Recent polling for the constituency of Gorton and Denton, encased in the northern Labor stronghold of Manchester, has the government finishing second or third behind the Greens or the right-wing Reform.
