Nathan Buckley butts heads with AFL great over Harley Reid as Eagles urged to move for rival

AFL great Jack Riewoldt says Lachie Neale would be the perfect mentor for West Coast young gun Harley Reid after he was tagged out of the contest in the big loss to the Swans. But Nathan Buckley reckons Reid already has enough senior players to mentor him at the Eagles, and suggested criticism around the 20-year-old was a little unfair.

A relentless tag from Sydney's James Jordon blunted Reid's effectiveness in the 128-point thumping by the Swans in Round 4. And West Coast coach Andrew McQualter conceded afterwards that his young superstar didn't have enough support from teammates as he was effectively taken out of the contest in their biggest ever defeat at Optus Stadium.

McQualter says teammates need to help frustrated Eagle, Cox backs Charlie

West Coach coach says Harley Reid needs others to shake off a tag after being well held by Sydney's James Jordon

WEST Coast did not do enough to help star midfielder Harley Reid break his tag against Sydney on Saturday night, with coach Andrew McQualter calling on his players to boost their efforts to support the star playmaker this season.

Reid copped his first heavy tag of the season in a humbling 128-point loss to the Swans at Optus Stadium, with disciplined stopper James Jordon restricting the No.1 pick to 17 disposals, one clearance and one mark.

There was little support for the 20-year-old, whose frustration was evident at times, with McQualter warning the Eagles will need to do more to ensure their best player can shine under continued opposition scrutiny this season.

It's always Sunny: How Gold Coast became a destination club

After years in the footy wilderness, Gold Coast is finally retaining – and attracting – players across both programs

EVERY club wants to be a destination club. A place where the culture is admired, success is achieved, and life away from football is attractive.

For years, it's been Geelong that has regularly attracted star players down the highway with their highly regarded culture, the promise of finals footy and a laidback lifestyle where country meets beach.

Now, a new contender has emerged to challenge the Cats, almost 1800km to the north.

As Gold Coast's on and off-field fortunes continue to improve, the club is increasingly attracting high-calibre players and administrators. And in a sign of things to come, Gold Coast has an embarrassment of riches coming through both its men's and women's Academy programs.

'We've wanted it': Suns relishing higher expectations after last year's finals breakthrough

When Damien Hardwick was unveiled as Gold Coast's newest coach in August of 2023, the three-time premiership-winning master tactician made it clear that he believed his new club was on the doorstep of success. He spoke at length about the direction the Suns were heading, the board's achievable objectives, and then declared that 80% of the side that would deliver the club's maiden flag was already on the list.

It was a proclamation that felt equal parts media spin and equal parts internal motivation for an organisation that had been anchored to the bottom third of the AFL ladder for basically the entirety of its existence. Aside from Hardwick, there weren't too many in footy circles who believed his grandiose statement to be true.

Suns skipper leans on next-gen to continue rise

Second-year captain Noah Anderson is already tapping into Gold Coast's next-generation leaders as the Suns aim to prove they're here to stay.

Anderson took the club to a maiden AFL finals campaign 15 years in the making in his first season at the helm, earning high praise from former Hawthorn great Luke Hodge along the way.

The 25-year-old averaged a career-high 30.1 disposals and seven clearances last year, polling 25 Brownlow Medal votes despite good mate and midfielder partner Matt Rowell collecting a staggering 39 on his way to the prize.

"I learnt that I could do it. It went well," Anderson reflected ahead of Friday's season opener against Geelong on the Gold Coast.

While an official heatwave warning hasn’t been issued by the weather bureau at this stage, people are being urged to remain mindful as the mercury soars.

A warm top of 34 degrees is expected across the coast today, however inland areas like Nerang and Coomera are expected to feel even hotter.

We will get a slight reprieve from the heat on Friday and Saturday with the mercury forecast to drop slightly to 29C, before things start to ramp up again on Sunday.

    A-Leagues Update: Central Coast Mariners

The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) has today taken over the management of the Central Coast Mariners on an interim basis while a sales process is completed.

The operator of the Central Coast Mariners notified the APL of the forfeiture of the club participation agreement (CPA), and with this, the APL has taken the proactive action to terminate the CPA.

The APL has made this decision to ensure stability and continuity for the Club, its players, staff, partners and fans, whilst in the middle of the 2025-26 season.

For the short term, the APL’s focus will be to ensure the ongoing obligations of the Club are met and operations continue, whilst a sales process is run with interested parties.

Discussions over the sale of the Central Coast Mariners to English side Queens Park Rangers are set to be revisited after control of the A-League club was ceded by long-time chairman Mike Charlesworth.

The Australian Professional Leagues announced on Monday that it had taken over the management of the Gosford-based Mariners, effective immediately, with the aim of selling the club to a new owner by the end of the season.
