Colby Covington notifies UFC of retirement

Colby Covington hasn’t fought since losing via TKO to Joaquin Buckley

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington has officially notified the UFC of his decision to retire from active competition.

UFC officials confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Monday. The UFC’s athlete database already has Covington listed as retired.

Mayra Bueno Silva and Brad Riddell have also been removed from the roster, MMA Fighting has learned.

Covington (17-5) last fought in the UFC in December 2024, suffering a third-round stoppage loss to Joaquin Buckley. That was a year after he came up short in his attempt to take the undisputed welterweight title away from Leon Edwards.

On Monday afternoon, the automated X account UFC Roster Watch announced that Covington had been removed from the promotion. Given the account’s record of accuracy, we can trust that this is most likely true.

Covington, a career welterweight, has been part of the UFC roster since 2014. He notably captured the division’s interim title with a decision defeat of Rafael dos Anjos in 2018. He later fought three times for the undisputed belt, coming up short each time, first in a pair of wars with Kamaru Usman, and later against Leon Edwards. Other highlights of his time in the UFC include defeats of top fighters like Dong Hyun Kim, Demian Maia, Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley, and Jorge Masvidal. While he has struggled with consistency lately, having not fought since a 2024 stoppage loss to Joaquin Buckley, his removal from the roster is a bit of a surprise, as he’s still a big name who can conceivably hang with all the but the division’s best fighters.

Report: Covington informs UFC of retirement

Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington has informed the UFC that he's retiring, sources told Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

Covington's last fight was a TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley in December 2024. His UFC career will end on a two-fight losing streak, as he was also beaten by Leon Edwards by unanimous decision in a welterweight title fight in December 2023.

His last win came against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 in March 2022.

Covington told MMA Junkie earlier this year that he was "bummed" about being left off the UFC Freedom 250 card, which is scheduled to take place at the White House on June 14.

In the last six games, Colby Parkinson has scored more touchdowns (six) than he did in his prior 77, combined.

Perhaps you'd heard that tidbit in the aftermath of his two-score performance in a win over Detroit in Week 15. But did you know that his next touchdown grab – which could come as soon as Thursday in Seattle against his former franchise – would set a franchise record for the most in a single season by a tight end?

"(Colby) goes to work, both in the meeting room and the practice field, as well as anyone we have on this squad," offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said this week. "He's a Ram through and through. I couldn't be happier for his individual success, which is leading to a lot of the stuff that we've been able to do offensively."

Rams free agent pushing hard for extension, but he's the last one fans think of

The 11-3 Los Angeles Rams entering Week 16 is not the same team that began the 2025 NFL season. Likely, few NFL teams that reach this point of their respective schedules can lay claim to being the same teams that began this year's journey. And so it falls on the players who evolve, who become leaders of the offense and defense, to step up in big games.

Right now, one of the key offensive players who needs to step up for this offense against the 11-3 Seattle Seahawks is a former Seahawk, tight end Colby Parkinson. Ending the second season of his three-year contract, this free agent tight end has certainly shown up for the team this season. In the past six games, he has tied teammate wide receiver Davante Adams for the most touchdown receptions with six. His six touchdowns have also tied the all-time franchise tight end record for touchdown receptions in a single season. And he has done it all against some of the stingiest defenses in the NFL.
