Cole Palmer breaks all-time Chelsea hat trick record, overtakes legends

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Cole Palmer moved clear of some Chelsea legends on Saturday as he scored his fourth hat trick for the team, setting a new club record.

A first-half treble against Wolves was Palmer's fourth for the club in the Premier League in just three years and saw him better the tallies of Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard who all managed three during their long careers in west London.

Palmer scored twice from the spot against the league's bottom side before a well-taken finish inside the box in the 38th-minute secured the hat trick and the record for the former Manchester City forward.

Spot-on Cole Palmer fires first-half hat-trick as Chelsea win at woeful Wolves

It would be easy to paint this as a Cole Palmer masterclass, the Chelsea midfielder completing his hat-trick inside the opening 38 minutes, but it is fair to say by the time he was substituted on the hour, his work was done. At that point it was 3-1 to the visitors, Wolves pulling a goal back early in the second half when Tolu Arokodare spun in the box to convert at a corner.

From there, if not earlier, it was hard not to feel as though Chelsea were going through the motions. Palmer’s trio of cool finishes, two from the penalty spot, earned victory and his third, to cap a slick team move, was surely the most pleasing for Liam Rosenior. Rosenior’s record as Chelsea head coach now reads seven wins in nine matches and four successive victories in the Premier League.

Inside the Long Eight-Year Wait for J. Cole’s The Fall-Off

When Childish Gambino released “This Is America” in 2018, the visual essay split open a wound that had been festering in plain sight. Here was Black culture hemorrhaging into entertainment pipelines worldwide while the bodies of Black men stacked up at the hands of police. The gap between consumption and consequence had grown grotesque, and hip-hop’s youngest voices seemed to embody that grotesquerie with precision. Flashy spending, drug-soaked aesthetics, face tattoos, disposable violence—a generation of SoundCloud rappers had crystallized every stereotype white audiences craved, gaining overnight riches through platforms that would forget them by next quarter’s earnings report.
