Each episode of this PI dramaâs second season is a half-hour haze suffused with melancholy and distressed urban beauty. Itâs the kind of show that could only exist on Apple TV
Getting a TV show made isnât easy. OK, so youâve got an interesting idea and some good scripts â but a network or streaming platform will have many further questions. How much will it cost to make, which age/demographic will enjoy it, can it be distilled in a grabby one-line summary, could it recoup investment by running to multiple seasons? Nobodyâs going to take a punt on your kooky pet project and risk losing money.

For whatever reason, I never reviewed the first season of “Sugar,” which I’d stopped watching before its late-season big reveal — the detective (Colin Farrell as John Sugar) is an alien. Had that happened earlier in the story I might have hung on, but strictly as a production, I’d found its brand of neo-noir to be mannered, gimmicky, obvious, overdirected (by Fernando Meirelles, the Brazilian director of the fine “City of Men”) and, as you may have surmised, off-putting.
This is by way of announcing that the second season arrives Friday on Apple TV and that I like it very much. The stylistic eccentricities have been dialed back, including the use of old Hollywood film clips to reflect the action and possibly the thoughts of its main character, a cinephile from space, who is both practicing and enacting the work of a private detective. He reads American Cinematographer; he takes the Paramount studio tour, then takes it again.

I wrote that two years ago when this little Apple TV neo-noir series about a space-alien P.I. ended its initial eight-episode run. Chances of a second season seemed slim on account of the broader mixed reception to the series’ late-season twist: the old-school-noir-obsessed John Sugar is actually an alien sent to Earth with a bunch of other aliens to blend into human society, observe, and report back to the homeworld. But once the initial aversion to the twist died down, it seems the powers that be over at Apple recognized that some shows need a whole-ass first season under their belt before they come into their own.
