‘Absolutely mindblowing’: Huge Aussie gold rush as star left in tears over incredible redemption

Sam Williamson had reason to shed tears on another golden Glasgow morning for Australia in the pool at the Commonwealth Games and not just because he had taken down a swimming legend to win the 50m breaststroke.

On a night where the “King” Kyle Chalmers set down a marker to his protege “Flying” Flynn Southam and Sam Short took another step towards Commonwealth Games immortality, the emotion displayed by Williamson was understandable.

Williamson saved his best for last as the Dolphins enjoyed their most successful day in the pool yet at this meet when clinching seven gold medals, a team display former champion Johanna Griggs described as “absolutely mind-blowing”.

Australia’s ‘most progressive’ census comes at personal cost to April – but it means their family will finally be counted

August 11’s national census will for the first time include questions about sexual orientation, sex at birth and gender

Self-professed “data nerd” April Long was excited to fill in their first census after welcoming their son, Kai, to the world. But as they opened the 2021 survey, they quickly realised it wasn’t made for them.

It excluded Long’s role as a parent, made assumptions about their gender and asked where Kai’s mother and father were born – when he has two mums.

Many “rainbow families” echoed similar experiences of the census being unable to fully capture the LGBTQ+ community.

Do you have to complete the 2026 Census? What happens if you don't?

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The Census is run by the Australian government every five years — but Peter Doukas, chair of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA), believes it's important to remember this questionnaire is strictly "apolitical".

Since 1911, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has conducted the Census of Population and Housing, regardless of the political party in power. Data collected is used to inform decisions around the funding and location of schools, transport and health care services.

Doukas told SBS News the Census also provides valuable information on the demographic makeup of multicultural communities.

2026 Census explained: Key date, how to fill it out, who needs to take part and potential fines

Census night is closing in and preparations to ensure every single person and household is counted are ramping up.

The survey, set to take place on Tuesday, August 11, is held every five years, providing a snapshot of the economic, social and cultural make-up of the nation and how it is evolving.

Australia’s largest collection of statistical data is used to guide planning for schools, healthcare, transport and other services, and informs the allocation of billions of dollars in Commonwealth funding.

Everyone in Australia on August 11 — including international tourists and even babies — needs to be included on a Census form.

Gauff completes Pegula comeback to reach first Wimbledon semifinal

Coco Gauff is making three-set wins at Wimbledon a habit this year — and her latest, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback against good friend and fellow American Jessica Pegula, earned her a spot in the semifinals at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

The 1 hour and 48-minute victory makes the two-time major champion the seventh active player to reach the semifinals or better at all four Grand Slam tournaments in her career, joining Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.

Gauff, who has now played four consecutive three setters in five rounds, called the run at the All England Club "pretty insane." She entered Wimbledon on a four-match losing streak on the surface, and also came from a set down to beat Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16. But she'll be the favorite on paper to reach her fourth career Grand Slam singles final when she faces No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova next, as Gauff will take a 6-1 head-to-head record against the Czech into their first grass-court meeting.

Perfect Against Americans… Until Now: Gauff, Pegula Ready to Battle for Supremacy at Wimbledon

Tuesday’s quarterfinal between Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff will be the first all-American Wimbledon women’s singles match featuring two Top 10 seeds since Serena and Venus Williams met in the 2009 final.

It’s a matchup both Pegula and Gauff have been looking forward to.

The pair have plenty of history. They’ve played together at the Olympics and the Grand Slams, reached the World No.1 doubles ranking as a team, and faced each other eight times in singles—but never at a major.

Their ninth meeting will be their biggest yet, with both players bidding for a maiden Wimbledon semifinal. Pegula is 8-0 against fellow Americans in 2026 and has won 19 of her last 20 matches against compatriots. Gauff is 6-0 against Americans this season. The cream of the crop is rising to the top.

Musk’s Brag Comes Back to Haunt Him as X Hit by Massive Outage

Alan Greenspan, the economist who led the Federal Reserve through five terms under four U.S. presidents and helped shape American economic policy for decades, has died at the age of 100. His wife, NBC News chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell, confirmed his death in a statement, saying he died Monday at their home from complications of Parkinson’s disease. “He was a giant of a man who helped shape the U.S. economy for decades under presidents of both parties, but was always honest in acknowledging his mistakes,” Mitchell, 79, said. Greenspan served as Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve from 1987, when he was first appointed by President Ronald Reagan, to 2006, making him one of the longest-serving central bankers in modern U.S. history. He presided over several major economic events that helped shape modern American capitalism, including Black Monday and the rise of the internet. But critics say his support for financial deregulation helped set the stage for the 2007–08 global financial crisis. Beyond Greenspan’s public life, Mitchell, his wife of 29 years, described him as a devoted partner. “To me he was my husband, who shaped my life from our very first date in 1984,” she said. “He will be remembered for his brilliance and his kindness. Being his life partner was the joy of my life.”

X Outage Seemingly Over As Cloudflare Deploys Fix

X, the social media site owned by Elon Musk and formerly called Twitter, appears to be back online for most after experiencing an outage Monday morning reported by more than 35,000 users in the span of half an hour.

Nearly 36,000 people reported issues with X between 9:45 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. Monday that appeared to be largely resolved by 10:30 a.m.—but not before users took to Threads, the similar text-based social media site owned by Meta, to complain.

Cloudflare, a web infrastructure and cybersecurity firm used by X and other companies, on Monday reported it was experiencing "increased error rates and latency in multiple services” but did not specify if its issues were tied to the X outage.

Max Verstappen came to a realisation during a chat with Daniel Ricciardo.

Max Verstappen has come to an awkward realisation about his age after a brief chat with Daniel Ricciardo.

The youngest driver to ever race in F1 when he made his debut in 2015 at the age of just 17, Verstappen remains the youngest to ever win a grand prix at just 18 years, 228 days at the 2016 Spanish GP.

However, as father time moves, Verstappen is now one of the elder statesmen on the grid, aged just 28, and will turn 29 in September.

Ricciardo ‘grateful’ Red Bull made F1 exit decision for him

Who is the first to pay the bill? F1 drivers play 'Fill in the Blanks'

Daniel Ricciardo has reflected on the decision to remove him from his Racing Bulls seat in 2024, as his F1 career came to an abrupt end.

Daniel Ricciardo has opened up on the conclusion of his Formula 1 career, acknowledging that he is "grateful" for Red Bull calling time on his stint as an F1 driver.

The Australian's F1 career came to a close following the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, as he was replaced by Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls for the remainder of that season. It was an abrupt end to his time in F1 after he came through the Red Bull family, initially driving for HRT before joining the Red Bull sister team, Toro Rosso, for the 2012 campaign.

Daniel Ricciardo says he’s ‘grateful’ Racing Bulls made the decision to replace him with Liam Lawson

Daniel Ricciardo says he’s “grateful” the decision to leave Formula 1 was made for him after Red Bull and Racing Bulls replaced him with Liam Lawson, leaving six races in the 2024 season.

His first F1 seat came to an end in 2022 when McLaren let him go, bringing in Oscar Piastri instead. A year later, Ricciardo got another chance with Red Bull’s sister team – still called AlphaTauri at the time – taking over from Nyck de Vries.

The Australian’s return hit a setback early when he broke his hand at Zandvoort. Although he managed to hold onto his seat into the next year, growing pressure eventually forced a change before the season finished.
