Live: Commonwealth Bank reports $10.9b annual profit, ASX to slip as US-Iran optimism fades

The nation's second-largest company Commonwealth Bank has reported its annual net profit rose to $10.9 billion.

The Australian share market is expected to start its day lower on fading optimism about a US-Iran peace deal happening any time soon.

Private health insurers are potentially seeking too much access to patients' confidential medical information, through what has been described by the Australian Private Hospitals Association as "aggressive" audit practices.

Under agreements with patients and hospitals, insurers are entitled to ask a medical practitioner for a patient's notes relating to an episode of treatment, to ensure the correct procedure item numbers were billed.

CBA profits hit $11 billion, dividend raised

Commonwealth Bank has notched up $11 billion in cash profit fuelled by growth across its vast loan and deposit portfolios, but it also warned economic growth was slowing amid higher interest rates and inflation.

CBA on Wednesday said cash net profit after tax rose 7 per cent in the year to June, as its operating income grew by 6 per cent, helped by growth in CBA’s key markets of home loans, business loans, consumer lending and household and business deposits.

Despite strong growth in the year to June, however, CBA also said new applications for mortgages had fallen 15 per cent since the May budget, as the housing market slows due to higher interest rates and a tightening in tax concessions for property investors. The bank also said costs from soured loans had increased due to cost of living pressures and increased economic uncertainty.

CBA reports $10.9b profit but warns economic growth is slowing

Commonwealth Bank has reported a 7 per cent increase in profit to $10.98 billion driven by loan and deposit growth, but says mortgage applications are down 15 per cent since the federal budget while growth is slowing as higher interest rates and costs put pressure on family budgets.

Commonwealth Games day 10: Finucane wins fourth gold; New Zealand claim netball glory – live

This year’s Commonwealth Games has been “phenomenal” and shown the event has the potential to carry on for another 100 years, the chief executive of Glasgow 2026 has told the Guardian. Phil Batty also insisted that the revamped Games, which included only 10 sports rather than the 19 in Birmingham four years earlier, had showcased a formula that made it financially sustainable as it heads to Amdavad in 2030.

“What a phenomenal 11 days,” Batty said. “I have had absolute pride in the way that the city and the Commonwealth has come together. These Games have not only exceeded expectations. They have demonstrated that major events can flex and evolve to be fit for purpose in the future.”

Georgia Hunter Bell storms to Glasgow glory

Englishwoman savours another important milestone in Scotland by cruising to 800m Commonwealth gold.

Glasgow has played its part in Georgia Hunter Bell’s rise to the top of elite athletics. It was after finishing just outside of the medal positions over 1500m at the world indoor championships there two years ago that she decided it was time to leave her day job behind and go all in on her return to athletics.

Under the Friday night lights at Scotstoun Stadium, the 32-year-old underlined why that decision was absolutely the right one to make as she strode to the Commonwealth 800m title with a display of complete control, capturing the first major outdoor title of her career.

It was Semi-Final day at The OVO Hydro, with New Zealand taking on England in the opening match.

Both sides forced early turnovers as the match ebbed and flowed during the first few minutes.

It was New Zealand that took an early lead, with Kelly Jackson producing a series of defensive efforts at goal defence to force the Roses into errors.

At the other end, the Silver Ferns moved the ball efficiently through the court to Grace Nweke, whose physical presence in the circle drew a number of penalties from the England defence.

The Roses entered the second quarter trailing by five goals but continued to struggle to prevent the feed into Nweke as the Silver Ferns extended their advantage.

One of the most hotly anticipated showdowns of the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been unceremoniously called off with the news England's Matt Richardson will not ride in the track cycling.

The sprint champion who represented Australia before defecting to the country of his birth following the Paris Olympics in 2024 has been ruled out by injury, Team England announced.

Richardson was racing in Japan and had been set to arrive in Scotland just before the track cycling program in Glasgow gets underway on Thursday.

Former Australian cyclist who defected to Team GB pulls out of Commonwealth Games with injury

Former Australian track cyclist Matt Richardson has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games because of an injury he suffered while racing in Japan.

In a major blow to the Glasgow games, the English team announced on Wednesday night (AEST) that their sprint ace would no longer compete.

Richardson sensationally defected from Australia to Great Britain soon after winning three medals at the Paris Olympics.

The Kent-born star’s showdown with former teammate Leigh Hoffman shaped as one of the biggest stories of the games.

“Unfortunately, due to an injury sustained in international racing earlier this week, Matt Richardson will no longer be able to compete for Team England at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,” team management posted on Instagram.

Commonwealth Games 2026 LIVE: Kennedy puts aside record celebrations to make 200m semis; Aussie 3×3 women make final despite being a player down

Forget gold rushes in the pool, we could be seeing an incredible run of gold medals on court as all four of our Australian teams take on 3×3 basketball finals tonight.

Our Australian women’s 3×3 wheelchair team had a devastating loss earlier today, but they face Canada this afternoon in a fight for the bronze medal.

Later on, we have the men’s wheelchair team in the gold medal game, fighting against England.

Following that we have both the men’s and women’s gold medal match.

Commonwealth Games 2026: England netball team thrash Tonga to boost semi-final hopes

England's Eleanor Cardwell has scored 121 goals from 132 attempts in four games at the 2026 Commonwealth Games

England broke their Commonwealth Games record goals tally with a convincing 94-32 victory over Tonga.

In a must-win Pool A game in their quest for a semi-final place, England raced into a 27-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained their dominance throughout at the Hydro in Glasgow.

Knowing goal average and possibly goal difference could be crucial in the battle for a top-two spot, the 2018 champions were keen for a significant margin of victory.

They did just that by surpassing their previous record of 89 goals in one game in the competition, set against Sri Lanka in 2002.

Commonwealth Games 2026 LIVE: More gymnastics gold for Australia as McDonald lands emotional win

It’s official, Australian Kate McDonald is the new Commonwealth champion on the uneven bars.

The 25-year-old was sensational in this afternoon’s final, and scored an impressive 14.333 to send her to the top of the leaderboard with a routine that was technically difficult and executed perfectly.

It was a nervous wait for McDonald, though, with three more competitors to come after her — including countrywoman Ruby Pass.

But there was no beating McDonald, whose score was the highest of the weekend. Canada’s Ellie Black won silver with 13.900 while Emily Roper of Wales won bronze with a 13.66.

Unfortunately, Pass fell from the bars mid-routine, and finished in eighth with a score of 11.666.

A score of 11.533 is enough for James Hardy to win bronze on the rings.

He was originally in a spot for silver but was pushed back to third. Still a great result for the Aussie!

The rings final is on right now and James Hardy and Jesse Moore are in contention.

Kelsey Cottrell and Dawn Hayman have missed out on progression in the women’s pairs by one measly point.

They were up against Northern Ireland and needed to win by two sets to zero. They needed it to be a 10-point margin too.

Listening to "California Dreamin'", Australian gymnast Kate McDonald hit the ground running on her road to Los Angeles by winning uneven bars gold at the Commonwealth Games.

It was sweet redemption for McDonald, who banished haunting memories of her "pretty poo" finish at the 2022 Birmingham Games with a near-flawless performance at Glasgow International Stadium, scoring 14.333 points.

So dominant was the 25-year-old that she was the only gymnast to hit the 14.000-point mark and blitzed next-best, Canadian great Ellie Black, by 0.433 points, with Wales' Emily Roper following for bronze.

Commonwealth Games 2026 as it happened: Australia sweep the podium in the men’s 50m swimming, Scott claims gymnastics silver

With another haul of medals from the pool, Australia has widened the lead on the medal tally with a total of 17 gold medals, nine silver and 13 bronze.

Cam McEvoy became the first person to swim 50m under 21 seconds twice and Lani Pallister became the first to win the women’s 1500m freestyle race at a Commonwealth Games. Jesse Moore took bronze in the men’s all-around gymnastics final and was followed by Breanna Scott’s silver in the women’s. The Australian team will be back later today for more opportunities for gold, bronze and silver. Here’s what’s on:

Cameron McEvoy's Glasgow double whammy has him looking to Los Angeles with confidence as he headlined another big night for Australia's Commonwealth Games swim team.

The sprint ace dominated the 50 metre freestyle final, going under 21 seconds for only the second time.

McEvoy's Games-record 20.97 followed his 20.88 world record in March and continued his remarkable swimming renaissance.

He led home an Australian medal sweep in the event — one of five swimming gold medals on day three — but the time was the bigger deal ahead of defending his Olympic title at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Commonwealth Games: Cam McEvoy and Iona Anderson lead the way as Australia win five more gold medals on Day 3

Cam McEvoy enhanced his status as one of the greatest sprint swimmers of all time and ticked off the last vacant box on his remarkable resume by claiming a gold medal in the men’s 50m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

And Australia’s younger contingent of swimmers also well and truly showed the sport’s future in the country is in great hands on another day which netted five finals victories, with WA’s Iona Anderson and son-of-a-gun Kai Taylor among the emerging stars to deliver stunning performances.

On the third day of proceedings at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, all eyes were on McEvoy.
