Communities 'in the middle of nowhere' are scared they'll run out of fuel

Remote community residents are worried about the future, with their groceries already increasing in price. (ABC News: Jane Bardon)

Remote Indigenous communities are asking for targeted government financial assistance to help them cope with large increases in fuel and food prices.

Aboriginal organisations are calling on the federal, state and territory governments to prioritise remote communities' needs for diesel to run their local power stations and to truck in food.

Federal Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy says she will lobby her colleagues to increase welfare payments for remote residents.

People in Australia's most remote and vulnerable communities are calling for help to deal with the highest fuel and food prices in the country, as they soar amid the war in Iran.

Sustainable energy is a vital part of Australia’s security

When former Australian Defence Force chief Chris Barrie and Australian Coal Association ex-chair Ian Dunlop co-write an article decrying the glacial pace of renewables adoption in Australia, and our resulting energy insecurity, our government should take heed and act (“Stop defending unsustainable past, April 18). Since the repealing of the carbon tax 12 years ago, there has been complacency and government inertia, with populist politics trumping prescient policy. Though Australia is blessed with intellectual and physical resources, we have twiddled our thumbs while the world has changed. We need to act now, and boldly, on fast-tracking electrification through renewables. Our prime minister needs to be braver – much braver. Rowan Godwin, Rozelle

The Opera and Ballet Communities Haven’t Taken Those Timothée Chalamet Comments Well: “We Should Be Trying to Uplift These Art Forms”

The 'Marty Supreme' star is taking some heat after a clip from his conversation with Matthew McConaughey resurfaced and showed Chalamet saying "no one cares" about ballet or opera.

Awards season can be tough. You’re at the forefront of every red carpet, every show, doing every interview, and marketing yourself as best you can while promoting a film. All eyes are on you, and it unfortunately leaves you wide open to criticism — take a look at best actress Oscar frontrunner Jessie Buckley, who this week is catching flak on social media for admitting that she asked her now-husband to rehome his cats when they started dating.

Hell hath no fury like classic arts being targeted. During his chat with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas, Timothée Chalamet had some fighting words for his fellow dancers. “I’m really right in the middle, Matthew. I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to keep movie theaters alive, we’ve gotta keep this genre alive,’ and another part of me feels like if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it,” he shared. “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there.” He then joked about the comment he just made, adding, “I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.” Chalamet then mimics opera singing before McConaughey reels him back in.
