Fonseca on Shelton Rematch: Let It Roll

Defending champion Ben Shelton will face Joao Fonseca in a Montreal blockbuster.

The tennis ball will be a wrecking ball when Joao Fonseca faces Ben Shelton in a blockbuster Montreal rematch.

Fonseca fended off Casper Ruud 7-6(6), 6-3 to set up a round of 16 showdown with defending-champion Shelton on Sunday. That match will be a rematch of the Munich quarterfinals last spring that saw Shelton stop Fonseca, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Fonseca, who has knocked off Grand Slam finalists Stefanos Tsitsipas and Ruud in succession, expects a match of first-strike tennis against Shelton.

The 19-year-old Brazilian says his approach vs. Shelton, the lone Top 10 player still standing, is simple: Let it roll.

Football transfer rumours: Guimarães set for Arsenal? Newcastle to bring in Froholdt?

Eddie Howe presumably won’t be reading this page for a while. Perhaps the now departed Newcastle boss will be seeking some beach time, looking out to sea and mentally preparing his audition for the England job while his assistant Jason Tindall works on trying to be as quick over the first few yards as Anthony Barry.

The Magpies fly out to La Manga on Friday for a pre-season training camp and it remains to be seen if Bruno Guimarães, a £75m Arsenal target, will turn up to the airport, meet them in Spain or send the lads a farewell on social media while house-hunting in London. Very latest reports suggest a deal to the champions has “moved closer” following Howe’s exit.

The biggest loser from Arsenal signing Bruno Guimaraes is not Martin Zubimendi

Bruno Guimaraes is very, very close to joining Arsenal from Newcastle United, according to recent reports.

All there is left, according to the latest from L'Equipe, is the agents fee, bonuses, and other small fees. The general agreement, in principle, is finalised between the two parties.

In a transfer that was not at all expected at the start of the saga, it now revolves around the notion that Arsenal have one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League in their ranks.

Martin Zubimendi was signed from Real Sociedad last summer, but it was quickly made clear to Mikel Arteta that in some games, Zubimendi was just not performing consistently well, and for them to take the leap, their midfield had to be a bit stronger. However, the player who is losing out the most after this signing is definitely not Zubimendi.

Xavier Bartlett recalled with Ollie Peake and Matt Kuhnemann making way as Australia insert Tigers in first ODI at Mirpur

Liam Scott will make his international debut in Australia's ODI series opener against Bangladesh, with the visitors also picking paceman Xavier Bartlett in anticipation of improved seam-bowling conditions in Dhaka.

Stand-in captain Josh Inglis won the toss and elected to bowl in Mirpur where the punishing humidity is forecast to top 80 per cent and the mercury hit 32C for the day game, the first of three matches in a series being played entirely in the Bangladesh capital.

After losing 1-2 to Pakistan on spinning snake pits last week, the Aussies have been greeted by a surface sporting live grass and which has proved more helpful to seamers than to spinners through five ODIs played on it so far this year.

Victorian trio Todd Murphy, Ollie Peake and Matt Short have been added to Australia’s squad for the ODI series against Bangladesh starting Tuesday as Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head were ruled out of the three-match series.

Ugochukwu feeling confident ahead of Qualifying after going fastest in Melbourne Practice

QUALIFYING: Nael beats Ugochukwu to pole as Campos seal Melbourne 1-2

Ugo Ugochukwu says he knows what he has to do to take pole in Melbourne, with the Campos Racing driver feeling confident about his chances after a good Free Practice session.

The American driver’s 1:34.607 was the fastest time by a good margin, with Rodin Motorsport’s Brando Badoer his closest rival, 0.427s behind.

For Ugochukwu, it was a positive start to the weekend, but speaking after stepping out of a debrief with Campos, he says the aim is all about taking this form forward to Qualifying.

“I’m feeling good of course,” said Ugochukwu. “It's a good start. I was feeling really good out on track, the car was feeling good, so I think we're in quite a good place going into Qualifying.

Ugochukwu and Mini fast in F2 and F3

Ugo Ugochukwu and Gabriele Mini have led the opening practice sessions of Formula 3 and 2, respectively as the Aussies find their feet.

F3 started Friday’s action with Ugochukwu carrying on his momentum from New Zealand and being well clear of the field.

Ugochukwu was the only driver to record a 1m34s time in the one-hour session with his 1:34.607 four tenths clear of Brando Badoer and Noah Stromsted.

James Wharton in his return to Prema was the leading Aussie in 17th place, being a second off the pace.

After a strong debut season last year, Wharton hopes to take a step forward after moving from ART.

Ugochukwu leads first FIA F3 practice of 2026 in Melbourne

Ugo Ugochukwu set the pace in practice ahead of the first round of the 2026 FIA Formula 3 championship.

The Campos Racing driver was 0.427 seconds quicker than Brando Badoer, while the next five drivers were all separated by less than a tenth of a second.

Practice was brought to an end five minutes early after flames appeared from the back of Mattia Colnaghi’s car and he came to a stop on track.

The majority of the session ran relatively incident free. A few drivers suffered lock-ups and trips over the grass, including Patrick Heuzenroeder, who is deputising for the injured Ernesto Rivera in Melbourne, but all were able to continue without problems.
