New England coach McDermott backs Connor and criticises Wane’s ‘unfair’ treatment

Brian McDermott, the new England head coach, has insisted that Super Leagueâs reigning Man of Steel, Jake Connor, is central to his plans for this yearâs World Cup, before appearing to attack the treatment of the Leeds Rhinos half-back by his predecessor Shaun Wane.

McDermott was unveiled on Thursday as Englandâs coach on a short-term deal for the tournament in Australia this autumn. The former Leeds and London coach is now working in the NRL as an assistant for Gold Coast Titans and saw off competition from Sam Burgess to be named as Waneâs successor.

The buildup to last yearâs Ashes, which proved to be Waneâs final series in charge, was overshadowed by his decision to omit Connor despite him being crowned Super Leagueâs best player in 2025. Wane insisted that selection was ânot difficultâ and insisted he paid no attention to accolades like the Man of Steel, with Connor consistently overlooked to the bemusement of many.

NRL 2026: Titans assistant lands England top job

The Titans congratulate NRL assistant coach Brian McDermott on his appointment as England head coach ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

The proud Englishman will take on the role as the most successful coach in the Super League, winning four titles in charge of the Leeds Rhinos, alongside Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge victories.

He has also won three premierships as a player and represented England / Great Britain in five Tests, becoming a highly respected figure in the international game.

McDermott will take on the prestigious role while continuing his NRL duties after joining Josh Hannay’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.

Japan has stormed into the Women's Asian Cup final against the Matildas, comprehensively outclassing South Korea 4-1 in their semi-final at Sydney's Stadium Australia.

Challenged by some as having had an easy ride to the semifinal, critics said Japan could not be judged until they played a team that was on their level.

Based on the evidence displayed in front of the smattering of 17,367 supporters at Homebush, the challenge will be finding a team that's even close to it.

Fulham boss Marco Silva is unsurprised by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's resurgence in front of goal as he prepares to be reunited with the Leeds United striker on Saturday.

Calvert-Lewin's purple patch in front of goal has helped steer Leeds eight points clear of the relegation zone, with the striker scoring nine goals in 19 Premier League outings.

Indeed, his total is only bettered by Antoine Semenyo (10), Igor Thiago (16) and Erling Haaland (20), but his potential was something Silva saw first-hand earlier in his managerial career.

During his time at Everton, Calvert-Lewin appeared 54 times in all competitions under Silva, netting 13 goals, with only Gylfi Sigurdsson (16) and Richarlison (21) scoring more for the Toffees in that time.

EB Games Is Confirmed To Be Closing All Stores In New Zealand

UPDATE: Not unexpected, but it is now confirmed that all EB Games New Zealand stores are closing on January 31st with the distribution centre set to close a month later on February 28th. This includes all 38 stores that will cease operation in just a few week’s time.

In a statement obtained by RNZ, it was said that the company received numerous offers, but “these parties did not present any proposals or solutions about how to keep the New Zealand business sustainable”.

EB Games is proposing to shut down its New Zealand business and close all its stores, according to a letter sent to employees.

In the note to employees seen by RNZ, managing director Shane Stockwell said: "This proposal is not final, and no decision will be made until we have completed a full consultation process in good faith with affected team members."

"This proposal includes the closure of all remaining EB Games New Zealand stores and the New Zealand Distribution Centre.

"If the proposal were to proceed, it would mean that all roles within EB Games New Zealand would be disestablished."
