    Fiorentina vs Pisa: Preview

The Viola get a rare midweek game against a fierce rival that’s proven plenty troublesome.

Fresh off its first Serie A win of the season, Fiorentina returns to the Coppa Italia. Having brushed aside Benevento, the round of 32, the Viola earned a Tuscan derby against the vile Pisa (boo hiss). It’s the second derby running for the Torri; they dispatched Empoli on penalties in the previous round. The match will be played Tuesday, 15 Septemeber 2026, at 20:00 GMT/3:00 PM EST, at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in beautiful Firenze.

Pisa was pretty bad in Serie A last year and fully deserved to finish last. The Nerazzurri only won two games. They deserved twice that many, though, because they gave Fiorentina all it could handle in a pair of draws. The defining characteristic of both matches was that Pisa wanted it way more, putting the Viola under constant pressure both in and out of possession and winning every 50/50.

The derby is on. Caracciolo returns, and there's rotation on the pitch. The formation puzzles again.

After the heavy and unexpected defeat against Entella and ahead of Sunday's match against Mantova, a game that proved extremely difficult both due to the caliber of the opponent and its being the last one before the break, Pisa would likely have been happy to do without a derby at this point in the season. Coach Bianco, who did not make any comments at the pre-match press conference, as previously agreed with the club, did, however, say after Friday's defeat regarding today's match: "We earned it, and we're going to play." So, let's focus on the pitch. A derby is still a derby, and a victory—which would be historic—could inject incredible vigor into the team. Furthermore, the cup match is also an opportunity for the coach to rotate and give playing time to players who have enjoyed less time. One name stands out: Caracciolo. The match against Entella exposed the team's defensive shortcomings, and so the captain, who has already come on at halftime in the league, will return to the center of defense. It will be his third start of the season. The last one was his debut against Padova. Primasso will certainly play: a first-minute debut for the 2005-born player, as Bianco had already announced. But that's not all: the rotation could be much greater. In goal, Scuffet is expected to replace Confente. The formation could revert to 3-4-2-1, but it wouldn't be surprising to see a 4-3-3. We already know that. Leris will certainly not play. The red card he received at the Arena has made him unavailable for the next round of the league: he will be used instead at the Franchi. On the right, Zanon is expected to return to a starting spot. In center, Loyola and Piccinini are competing for a starting spot, but who knows, Bianco might want to keep one of Correia, Vural, or Leone. Up front, Petagna and Tramoni will most likely be rested. Moreo is itching to get back into the starting lineup (his only appearance was in the previous cup match against Empoli). The number 32 is expected to be one of the two players behind the striker, most likely alongside Emanuele Rao, who hasn't featured in recent games. Pittarello has a chance to start at center forward.
