    Excerpts of text messages reportedly exchanged by a defendant in the Cornell University gang-rape case and the woman who claims she was assaulted were published by CBS News on Tuesday, a day after New York prosecutors said they were reopening a criminal investigation.

    The texts were reportedly sent within days of the alleged October 2024 assault at a campus fraternity house in which a female student said she was drugged and repeatedly raped over the course of seven hours by multiple men who were alerted to her presence on the social media platform Snapchat.

    A week after insisting that federal privacy law precluded the University from discussing its disciplinary response, Kyle Kimball, vice president for university relations, assured the public that the punishments in Jane Doe’s case were consequential, cautioning that the narrative of minimal consequences “will make survivors feel less safe and supported” and will entrench the underreporting of sexual assault.

    The fact that the University found its voice only after a lawsuit, a reopened criminal investigation and a week of national headlines is itself instructive, for the account it now offers so readily was owed to this community in 2024, not after 23 months of silence in which the Jane Doe went from confiding in the University to suing it.

    A prosecutor has relaunched an investigation into allegations a woman was gang-raped at a Cornell University fraternity.

    The university says it supports the investigation and has defended its handling of the initial report to campus police.

    The Tompkins County district attorney said his office would present evidence to a New York grand jury.

    A United States prosecutor has reopened an investigation into allegations a woman was plied with alcohol and drugs and gang-raped by seven students at a Cornell University fraternity.

    The woman, identified only by a pseudonym, filed a lawsuit on September 16, saying she was sexually assaulted at the Chi Phi fraternity house on the Ivy League campus in October 2024.
