Billy Donovan has decided to step down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons.

The Bulls announced Donovan's decision Tuesday, saying they wanted the longtime coach to remain in Chicago but adding that they respected his choice.

The Bulls made clear that the organization wanted Donovan back after making sweeping changes to the front office, but Donovan held an option in his contract for next season and elected to step down after extensive meetings with team ownership in the past week, sources told ESPN.

Giddey’s Bulls coach gone after six-year reign as Chicago NBA clean-out continues

Billy Donovan stepped down as coach of the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday after the team missed the NBA playoffs for the fifth time in his six seasons in charge.

Donovan, who guided Florida to US college crowns in 2006 and 2007, went 226-256 with the Bulls after arriving in 2020, but had his worst season in Chicago in this past campaign, going 31-51.

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organisation, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold,” Donovan said in a statement released by the club.

Cotton's 42 puts 36ers 1-0 up over Phoenix in NBL semis

The great Bryce Cotton poured in 42 points to put the Adelaide 36ers within one win of their first NBL grand final since 2018 with a 104-97 victory over South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Fresh from collecting his sixth league MVP award, Cotton felt he was "in a flow state" as he hit 17-of-25 from the field – including 6-of-11 from three-point range – in front of a record Adelaide Entertainment Crowd of 10,055 on Tuesday night.

Captain Dejan Vasiljevic added 17 points off the bench as the Sixers took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three semi-final play-off series.

‘People have taken swings at us’: Coach’s defiant one-man team message after MVP’s masterclass

Adelaide 36ers head coach Mike Wells praised star guard Bryce Cotton after his 42-point performance powered the 36ers to a 104–97 Game One semi-final win over the South East Melbourne Phoenix, but insisted the defining victory was far from a one-man show, with the entire team playing a key role in the result.

Adelaide secured their first semi-final victory since 2018 in front of 10,055 fans at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre last night. The 36ers now turn their focus to Saturday’s Game Two at John Cain Arena, where a win would send them through to the NBL Final series.

King: Phoenix did the work, couldn’t convert

Usually the team that loses Game 1 is the one searching for answers. For South East Melbourne, though, the issue wasn’t effort or execution. It was simply making shots.

The Phoenix did much of what coach Josh King demands in Tuesday night’s Playoff opener in Adelaide. They just couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities as they now return home for a do-or-die Game 2.

Before the game, King would have happily accepted the numbers his team produced. South East Melbourne attempted 13 more field goals, earned four more free throws, grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and committed just six turnovers.

Those are the types of possession stats that usually lead to wins.

Bryce Cotton wins sixth Andrew Gaze MVP Award

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Bryce Cotton continues to etch his name into NBL folklore, adding yet another Most Valuable Player award to his ever-growing trophy cabinet.

This was the sixth time Cotton accepted the Andrew Gaze Trophy as the NBL's MVP, which puts him just one behind the award's namesake, who won seven over the course of his illustrious career.

Cotton won the award on the back of yet another season of substantial production, averaging 25.7 points and 7.6 assists per game — both league-leading, with the 33-year-old claiming his ninth NBL scoring title — as he guided the Adelaide 36ers to a top-two finish in his first season with the franchise.

League's best rewarded with All-NBL selection

The two prestigious All-NBL teams for the 2025-26 season were named at the competition’s Monday night awards evening, held in front of a star-studded Crown Palladium.

Headlining the First-Team are Andrew Gaze MVP Trophy finalists, Bryce Cotton from the Adelaide 36ers and Kendric Davis from the Sydney Kings.

Rounding out the  All-NBL First Team for the 2025-26 season are South East Melbourne duo Nathan Sobey and John Brown III, as well as Perth’s Kristian Doolittle.

Brown III has been a revelation in his first season in the NBL, taking out the Damian Martin Trophy for the Best Defensive Player, while powering the Phoenix to their best-ever regular season record.

Legend in the making claims NBL MVP by ONE vote after NBA champ cops shock snub

Bryce Cotton is NBL MVP once again, claiming the Andrew Gaze Trophy for the third consecutive season and a remarkable sixth time overall.

Cotton was the biggest story of the NBL season but for very different reasons, after leaving the Perth Wildcats for the Adelaide 36ers, then leading his new team to second place and a semi-final berth.

He pipped last season’s runner-up Kendric Davis in the tightest race in years.

Cotton won 96 votes to 94, meaning while he won by two, just one person switching from Cotton to Davis would’ve made it a tie for the third time in league history.

This season with Adelaide, Bryce continues to add to that legacy, delivering again and again in NBL26. It raises one question. How many more clutch moments are still to come?

The NBL's awards picture is coming into focus, and it's best we prepare ourselves for a breathless sprint to the finish line.

That's because, while several trophies already feel destined for particular shelves as the 2025-26 regular season winds down, hovering above it all is an MVP race that once felt over, but is now wide open.

It seems to be a genuine coin flip between two guards who have defined the league all season. Bryce Cotton has been the constant, once again piling up elite production while steering the Adelaide 36ers to the top of the ladder (for now). Kendric Davis, meanwhile, has surged, transforming Sydney into the most imposing team in the competition and making a late, forceful case.

Gleeson reveals Cotton’s stunning NBA rejection

Five-time champion coach Trevor Gleeson has lifted the lid on how Bryce Cotton turned down an NBA shot to win a title with the Wildcats. ‍

Speaking with Fox Sports, Gleeson revealed the superstar guard, then in his first season in Perth, had a 10-day contract on the table from the Atlanta Hawks.

At 24 and in blistering form, Cotton’s NBA interest was expected. His response, however, stunned everyone.

“I rang Bryce up. This is about 6.30 in the morning. Phone goes straight through to the message bank,” Gleeson said

“I thought, ‘OK, well, they’re organising his flights and he’s all good’.

Why NBL’s undisputed king isn’t in the NBA… and day he snubbed US in stunningly ‘unselfish’ act

When Bryce Cotton stepped onto the floor for the Perth Wildcats in January 2017, few could have imagined that moment would mark the beginning of one of the most extraordinary careers the NBL has ever seen.

What began as a mid-season signing for a struggling team would soon evolve into a legacy defined by championships, MVPs, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to winning.

Nearly a decade later, Cotton’s story stands as one of the defining chapters in modern NBL history – and remarkably, it was almost over before it truly began.

From NBA afterthought to NBL icon: The making of Bryce Cotton

BRYCE Cotton has solidified himself with the greats of the National Basketball League (NBL) and is regarded as arguably the greatest import in competition history. With a resume of five MVPs, three Championships and two Grand Final MVPs, his accolades speak for themselves.

Whilst he is now recognised as an NBL icon, his journey which took him to where he is now is rarely discussed, filled with obstacles, setbacks and perseverance.

At the age of nine, a young Cotton would be diagnosed with epilepsy so severe that the doctor said he would not make it past the sixth grade. Treatment included daily medication, and ironically, his last seizure would be on the final day of the sixth grade.
