The High Court has dismissed former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann's bid to challenge the outcome of his failed defamation case.

The Federal Court had ruled that on the balance of probabilities, Mr Lehrmann did rape Brittany Higgins at Parliament House in 2019.

The High Court was his last legal avenue to challenge the outcome.

Mr Lehrmann had sued Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson over a 2021 interview on The Project featuring Ms Higgins, in which she said she was raped in the office of then-senator Linda Reynolds, but did not name the man she was accusing.

The high court has dismissed his bid to clear his name of findings that, on the balance of probabilities, he raped Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in 2019

Bruce Lehrmann has lost his last legal avenue to challenge his failed defamation case against Network 10 and Lisa Wilkinson after Australia’s top court dismissed his case.

The high court dismissed his bid to challenge the outcome in a short judgment published to its website on Thursday.

It comes after Lehrmann lost an appeal against the finding last year.

In April 2024, Justice Michael Lee found that on the balance of probabilities Lehrmann raped former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in parliament house in 2019, and that Lehrmann was therefore not defamed when Wilkinson interviewed Higgins about the case on The Project.

A former High Court justice previously tapped by Labor to probe Scott Morrison’s multiple ministries is in the frame to lead the widely expected federal royal commission into the Bondi killings.

The potential appointment of Virginia Bell has been flagged by senior Labor figures in recent days and has already prompted pushback from some Jewish leaders in NSW, Bell’s home state, over their belief she might be too left-leaning, a claim the government and Bell’s backers in the legal fraternity will challenge.

The private worry expressed by Jewish leaders has complicated the choice for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as he and his ministers work out details of a national probe he has resisted for weeks.

A royal commission into New Zealand's worst mass shooting could provide a blueprint for a federal inquiry into the Bondi massacre, legal experts say.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has softened his position on setting up a royal commission into the December 14 terrorist attack, where 15 people were killed and more than 40 injured, after previously rejecting calls for such an inquiry.
