    Organised crime gangs are using the national disability insurance scheme to launder money, earn income and hide assets, law enforcement officials have warned parliament, seriously undermining probity in the $50bn program.

    The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) has told a review into NDIS integrity that criminals are paying cash kickbacks to participants and their families, and sometimes resorting to intimidation and threats of physical violence towards vulnerable people to rip off taxpayers.

    When government money comes pouring into the private sector, businesses of dubious character tend to spring up quickly.

    The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) may be one of the biggest facilitators of this at the moment.

    As of mid-December, there were 269,432 active NDIS providers across Australia, the vast majority of which (around 94%) are what’s known as unregistered providers. It means they haven’t been audited and approved by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) – one of the main regulators – to make sure they’re delivering quality services and sticking to the rules.

    It’s become a common refrain with movies over the last few years that films that struggle in theaters frequently become big hits once they arrive on streaming platforms. The latest example of this trend has arrived on Prime Video as the heist drama Crime 101, which failed at the box office despite a strong critical reception, is now killing it at home.

    Crime 101 only debuted on Prime Video on April 1st, but the film, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry, is already the top streaming movie globally on the platform and the number two movie in the United States. It’s just the latest case of audiences clearly “waiting for streaming” when it comes to theatrical releases that people clearly want to see, but not quite enough to go to the theater.

    'Crime 101' Early Reactions Call Chris Hemsworth Thriller the Perfect "Old-School" Action Throwback

    Following several glowing first reactions to MCU star Chris Hemsworth’s new action thriller, Crime 101, the praise (largely) continues as more early reactions to the heist flick emerge. Praised by initial responses as “the first great movie of the year,” these latest takes heap praise on the “killer cast,” which includes Hemsworth alongside fellow MCU actor Mark Ruffalo and Oscar-winner Halle Berry, while commending the movie’s 90s throwback approach.

    Critic Scott Menzel paid Crime 101 the “highest compliment” when likening the action crime thriller to something “ripped straight out of the early 90s.”

    Crime 101 feels like a crime thriller ripped straight out of the early 90s and I mean that as the highest compliment. The entire cast is excellent, carrying that old-school charm and energy that took me right back to watching movies like this with my mom and dad. While it’s a bit too long, Crime 101 is a reminder that engaging action thrillers don’t need wall-to-wall visual effects to work. A really great time at the movies.

    Crime 101 is ready to stake its claim for a place in the pantheon of crime films.

    One of 2026's crop of new movies, Crime 101, based on Don Winslow's novella namesake, is billed as a seat-gripping heist thriller that might make for a perfect date night this coming Valentine's Day weekend. And, with Marvel actors Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan among its A-list cast, it's certainly got the star power to get bums on seats.

    According to writer-director Bart Layton, though, Crime 101's true ace up the sleeve is its nostalgia factor. Raised on a healthy diet of neo-noir, action thriller and crime-comedy films, Layton is nothing if not a crime-genre disciple.

    Why Chris Hemsworth’s heist thriller is a ‘movie for adults’

    Writer and director Bart Layton on his new heist thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, and what it’s like making the giant leap from documentaries to a Hollywood heist thriller.

    The movie business has evolved to a point that most pictures are separated into two spheres.

    One is the “four-quadrant” blockbuster designed to appeal to eight year olds and 80 year olds. The other is smaller, often indie movies that have fervent fans but fewer ticket sales. Rare is the film that sits in the middle.

    You know the one. We used to make and watch them all the time. They can be thrilling and plot-driven, but they’re often grounded in characters, have a mid-range budget and feature movie stars wearing regular clothes rather than costumes.

    Any show with “Run” as its title surely ought to bolt out of the gates and fang it hell-for-leather – barely stopping to catch its breath, proverbial sirens wailing. So it was a touch disappointing to discover that this new six-part series about notorious bank robber Brenden Abbott (George Mason) takes a while to find its rhythm, jumping around in time and stop-starting when it could’ve been charging ahead. Non-linear structures can be invigoratingly unconventional but in Run it often stalls momentum and feels too clever by half.
