    I know Elijah Hollands has been front of mind for so many of us connected to the Carlton Football Club. 

    Elijah's welfare is what matters most right now, and please be assured that remains our focus.

    Since the game, the Board has been working closely with Chief Executive Officer Graham Wright and General Manager of Football Chris Davies to obtain a thorough account of the circumstances both leading into and throughout the match. The Club has been in regular consultation with the AFL and AFLPA, and will continue to do so, as facts are gathered in a supportive and respectful setting, and we are confident that valuable learnings will come from this process.

    Housing crisis deepens as population growth outpaces new housing supply

    Australia’s population is growing three times faster than new housing is getting built due to record levels of migration coupled with sluggish home construction, new figures have revealed.

    Experts have warned the result of the imbalance is that competition for housing could intensify this year even as interest rate hikes and the fuel crisis threaten to pull down home prices.

    Analysis of ABS figures by conservative think tank the Institute of Public Affairs showed population growth over 2023 to 2025 was 1.5 million against a total 527,222 housing completions.

    Institute of Public Affairs senior fellow Dr Kevin You said the mismatch between supply and population growth revealed why the country continued to have a housing crisis.

    Israeli prime minister’s remarks come shortly after Trump told US media he had asked Netanyahu to be more ‘low-key’

    “I wish to inform you: There is no ceasefire in Lebanon,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israelis in a short video address posted on X. He said Israel was “continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force, and we will not stop until we restore your security.”

    His comments come shortly after President Trump said he had asked Netanyahu to be “more low-key” in Lebanon, as the US seeks to negotiate with Iran to bring the war to an end.

    Netanyahu added that he had instructed his government to “open direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible.” The talks will focus on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon, he added.

    Hospitals in Beirut struggle to deal with casualties after Israeli attacks

    Doctors warn of worsening crises as vital supplies run low and Israeli attacks devastate Beirut and surrounding areas.

    Beirut, Lebanon – As bombs rained down on Lebanon’s capital, hundreds of people rushed to the American University of Beirut (AUB) Hospital, many crying, many scared. Children were looking for their siblings or their parents, unsure if they were dead or alive.

    Israeli forces had bombed 100-plus targets across the country in 10 minutes on Wednesday, despite a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran that many thought would include Lebanon.

    “In under an hour, we received around 76 injured people. Unfortunately, six people didn’t make it,” Dr Salah Zeineldine, AUB’s chief medical officer, told Al Jazeera, as the hospital became an “epicentre” for victims of the Israeli attacks.

    Post-ceasefire attacks in Lebanon spark fears war would get 'much worse'

    People in Lebanon fear the war is going to get "much worse" after Israel hit the country's capital, Beirut, with a fresh wave of air strikes overnight.

    Israel launched the attacks on what it said were Hezbollah targets hours after the US and Iran announced they had reached a ceasefire agreement.

    Peace negotiations will begin in Pakistan at the weekend but it is unclear whether fighting will stop in Lebanon, which the US and Israel have claimed is not covered by the ceasefire.

    On the streets of Beirut, a fresh sense of fear and panic has set in.

    Overnight, Israel launched widespread attacks on the Lebanese capital — the most intense wave of Israeli air strikes to date in this war.

    The oil and ‌gas crisis triggered by the blockade of the strait of Hormuz is “more serious than the ones in 1973, ​1979 and 2022 together”, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said.

    Speaking as Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the waterway approached, Fatih Birol told ⁠Le Figaro newspaper that the impact of the Middle East conflict on the oil market was larger than the combined force of the twin shocks of the 1970s and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

    War forces a harsh reckoning on energy

    The Iran conflict has cemented the shift from concerns about sustainability to security of supply.

    Despite the urging of the global renewables industry and the European Union, most of the world has consistently refused to pay a “green premium” for energy.

    That pricing reality was clear well before the Iran war. But the conflict’s massive disruption to oil and gas markets has abruptly switched the global focus to the prospect of a “security premium” for what were commonly derided as fossil fuels in steady decline.

    We’ve just heard from Pete Hegseth. He reiterated the claim from Donald Trump that the US president knew nothing about the attack on Iran’s South Pars gasfield.

    However, Reuters is reporting that Israel says its attack on the gas facilities was coordinated with the United States.

    Israel has not publicly acknowledged responsibility for the South Pars attack. On Wednesday night, Trump said in a social media post that Washington “knew nothing about this particular attack” and that Israel would not attack the gas field further unless Iran again attacked Qatar.

    US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the United States' objectives in the war against ‌Iran have not changed since strikes started on February ‌28.

    The United States has carried out strikes against 7000 targets inside Iran and hit more than 40 Iranian mine-laying vessels and 11 submarines, ‌according to the Pentagon.

    "Our ‌objectives, ⁠given directly from our America-first president, remain ​exactly what they were on day one," Hegseth told reporters.

    In his first public remarks as Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei apparently called for national unity and said that all US bases in the region should close or face attacks.

    The strait of Hormuz will remain closed in order to pressure Iran’s enemies, Khamenei reportedly said. He was not seen in the broadcast and the statement was delivered by a newsreader.

    Iran wants good relations with its neighbouring countries, Khamenei’s statement said, and asked them to close down their US bases as that is what Iran is targeting.

    Two tankers were set ablaze in Iraqi waters in what appears to be an escalation of Iranian attacks on Gulf shipping, killing at least one crew member.

    Media researchers say Victoria has reached a "crisis point" with the number of suppression orders being granted across the state to curtail court reporting.

    Victorian courts lead the nation in the number of suppression orders handed down, with more than one order handed down every day in the state.

    Suppression orders have been used in recent years to prevent the reporting of details in high profile cases, including the rape trial of Tom Silvagni.

    Victorian judges and magistrates handed down the most gag orders in the nation and at one point were averaging more than one a day, according to new research which has found public interest journalism in the state has reached a "crisis point".

    ‘It’s wrong’: Former judge says mental health suppression orders threaten court system

    Victoria’s top law officer says she is working to balance the need for transparency in the courts with the right to a fair trial, after a report warned of a “crisis” in open justice.

    But a former Supreme Court judge has defended the system, saying it is psychiatrists providing evidence for mental health suppression orders who pose the biggest threat to transparency, and that while some judges are “dills”, they are outliers in the profession.

    The Age reported on Tuesday that a Monash University study, commissioned by the Melbourne Press Club, judged Victoria’s court system to be the least transparent in Australia.

    Covering the courts can be a tough gig. The pace is fast, there are many legal considerations to be across, and media outlets are hungry for quality stories, quickly.

    Our study aimed to capture the experience of senior reporters covering the courts in Melbourne and Victoria. We conducted in-depth inverviews with 12 journalists from five of the major media outlets in Victoria.
