The Cubs traded for a starting pitcher. Okay, Jed Hoyer: Now sign a top hitter

Let’s go, Tom and Jed. Give Cubs fans what they deserve.

One thing I think everyone here agrees on — and we don’t all agree on much! — is that the Cubs ought to sign one of the top free-agent hitters this offseason.

In my view, now that the team has traded for a cost-controlled starting pitcher — and potentially a very good one in Edward Cabrera — it’s time to spend the big bucks on one of the top free-agent hitters. The Cubs need a bat to replace Kyle Tucker, who departed as a free agent.

There are four such players, and any one of them would be a big help to the 2026 Cubs offense. Let’s take a look at each, in alphabetical order.

Here's the latest in Cubs' search for 2 key ingredients

CHICAGO – During the Winter Meetings last month, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer expressed that there was a “real focus” and “energy” to the team’s pursuits on multiple fronts. He was also quick to add a cautionary qualifying statement.

“I think it’ll lead to activity – I can’t tell you when,” Hoyer said. “We could have an active December. We could have an active January. I don’t know. We’re not going to do bad deals just to do something quick.”

Nearly a month later, with 2026 upon us and Cubs Convention (Jan. 16-18) approaching, Hoyer and his front-office team have yet to make a big-ticket splash this offseason. There has been nearly $30 million spent between the bullpen and bench, plus Shota Imanaga’s decision to stay for $22.025 million via the qualifying offer, but two primary goals remain unsolved: adding an impact bat and/or a starting pitcher.

MLB insider gives Tom Ricketts no cover in blunt comments about Cubs' offseason

It's not just fans who are waiting for the Chicago Cubs to make a big splash this winter. With numerous high-profile free-agents still available, including the likes of Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, Framber Valdez and Ranger Suarez, there's still time to change the narrative.

Unfortunately, there are no indications to suggest the front office or ownership is poised to do an about-face when it comes to how they approach the offseason and roster-building,

In the latest episode of the Baseball Insiders podcast, FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray singled out the Cubs, more or less saying it was inexcusable to lose Tucker, one of the best players in the game when healthy, and respond only by rebuilding a bullpen (moves, which, frankly had to be made given they lost almost every impact reliever from last year).

Cubs land Cabrera, trade top prospect to Marlins

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

The Cubs on Wednesday acquired pitcher Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Marlins that sent top outfield prospect Owen Caissie and two other hitting prospects to Miami.

The Cubs also dealt away infield prospects Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon in exchange for Cabrera, a popular trade target for multiple contenders who will improve a Chicago rotation that includes veterans Matthew Boyd, Jameson Taillon and Shota Imanaga.

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said last month that the organization was "in the market" to acquire pitching help — in the rotation and in the bullpen. Cabrera's swing-and-miss ability is attractive to a Cubs organization that lacks that attribute in its rotation.

The dynamics of the National League Central continue to shift as the St. Louis Cardinals continue their rebuild of their minor league system with many unknowns on their major league roster while the Chicago Cubs made a big trade for Miami Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera.

I first saw the news of this Chicago Cubs acquisition shared by Jeff Passan on X.

MLB Trade Rumors says the other minor leaguers going from the Cubs to the Marlins in this deal along with outfield prospect Owen Caissie are Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon. The trade for Edward Cabrera can be added to a list of moves made this offseason by the Cubs including trades for pitchers Ryan Pressley from the Astros and Matt Festa from the Rangers. Former Cardinal Carson Kelly also signed a two-year deal with the Cubs. Oh, and the Chicago Cubs have also reportedly been in touch with Bo Bichette, too. I checked the poll that MLB Trade Rumors shared regarding Bichette and the Cubs are believed to be the 4th most likely landing spot behind the Blue Jays, Dodgers and Phillies according to their crowd.

Yankees Unable to Land Edward Cabrera, Team Was "Never Close"

It has been a swing-and-miss offseason for the New York Yankees. They have expressed interest in multiple free agents, but have not landed many. The only significant players signed by New York have been the re-signings of Amed Rosario, Paul Blackburn, Ryan Yarbrough, and Trent Grisham. With that, the Yankees have been hoping to land a big-name starting pitcher via trade, while also being involved in other free agent talks.

One pitcher on their radar was Edward Cabrera of the Miami Marlins. However, New York is likely to miss out on the right-hander after the Chicago Cubs are reportedly extremely close to acquiring him.
