Viva Energy's chief executive, Scott Wyatt, has defended a massive jump in the company's refining profit margins amid surging fuel prices.

Earlier this week, Viva reported a Geelong refining margin of $US22 a barrel over the first quarter, only one month of which was affected by the spike in oil prices associated with the Iran conflict.

Those margins were almost three times higher than the $US7.90 a barrel recorded in the first quarter of last year, and come on top of the rise in crude oil prices, which are up about $US30 a barrel since the beginning of the Iran war on February 28.

‘He’s only 18’: May defends teen teammate as Tigers star fires back at critics

Taylan May has come to the defence of young teammate Heamasi Makasini after the teenage sensation found himself in the crosshairs of critics over the past few days.

After a tremendous start to the season, which has seen him play in the centres or on the wing, Makasini had a forgettable performance last weekend against the Brisbane Broncos.

Although he had strong carries and numbers earlier in the match, he came up with four costly errors at the backend of the contest, which eventually saw their opponents win by one point via a field goal from Adam Reynolds.

NRL 2026: Raiders star ruled out as Benji Marshall explains real reason Tigers player was dropped

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has revealed that boom teenager Heamasi Makasini has a foot injury, but admitted he would have dropped him anyway for a freshen up. And Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has confirmed that Simi Sasagi won't play on Thursday night due to a hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old Makasni burst onto the scene in the pre-season when he scored a stunning solo try against the Panthers. He forced his way into the first-grade team to start the regular season, and despite being solid he hasn't really lived up to the immense hype.

For an 18-year-old he's been holding his own against some seasoned NRL veterans. But he had his worst game last weekend against Brisbane, making six handling errors.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has failed to declare director roles or shareholdings in three companies, including one tied to her upcoming satirical film, A Super Progressive Movie.

The companies are run or co-owned by party official Alexander Jones, who pleaded guilty to a $24,000 attempted electoral fraud in 2023. Two involve James Ashby, her chief of staff.

Senate rules require updates to business interests within 35 days but corporate records show Hanson has not declared one directorship for nearly five years.

The omissions are the latest in a series of transparency failures by the Queensland senator, who this month declared her intention to form government.

Aryna Sabalenka defends 'Battle of the Sexes' match after Brisbane International win

Aryna Sabalenka defended her 'Battle of the Sexes' match against Nick Kyrgios after she opened her 2026 season with a 47-minute victory against Cristina Bucsa.

Women's world number one Sabalenka lost 6-3 6-3 to Kyrgios in a much-publicised exhibition match in Dubai last month.

Belarusian Sabalenka, a four-time major winner, said it helped her fitness after she swept aside Spain's Bucsa, ranked 28th in the world, 6-0 6-1 in the second round of the Brisbane International.

"When you play against a guy, the intensity is completely different," Sabalenka said.

"Especially when there is Nick, who is drop-shotting every other shot, you move a lot, so there was a great fitness for me."

Last year's Australian Open women's final combatants are on a collision course for a Brisbane International quarter-final showdown after both had straight-set wins in the second round.

Defending Open champion Madison Keys prevailed 6-4 6-3 over fellow American McCartney Kessler, while world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka destroyed Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-0 6-1 in 48 minutes.

Both have to get through third-round clashes but world No.7 Keys, who beat Sabalenka in three sets in last year's Australian Open final, is aware of the dangled carrot and the challenge ahead of her.

A defiant Ben Stokes has gone into bat for his England teammates ahead of the Boxing Day Test.

Stokes said the mental health of his charges was his top priority as the fallout from England's Noosa trip continues.

England have made two changes for the Boxing Day Test with Ollie Pope dropped and Jofra Archer ruled out for the rest of the tour with a side strain.

An emotional Ben Stokes has defended the England team after a social media video said to feature Ben Duckett was the latest crisis to hit their disastrous Ashes tour.

Stokes vows to 'protect' players, Archer out of Ashes

Another England fast bowler injured as Stokes issues emotional defence in face of 'pile on'

An emotional Ben Stokes vowed to close ranks around his players amid ongoing fallout from their mid-Ashes Noosa getaway, as England's tour went from bad to worse after Jofra Archer became their latest bowler to go down with injury.

A pace attack hyped as the quickest England have ever brought here has now seen its two fastest pacemen go down with tour-ending injuries as Archer was revealed to have suffered a side strain during last week's Adelaide Test.

Mark Wood was sent home with a knee injury last month after bowling just 11 overs for the tour, with Archer now joining him having sent down 80 overs across the first three Tests. The 30-year-old has endured an injury-plagued career and spent four years on the sidelines before returning in July.

Stokes calls for ‘empathy’ for England players and pledges support for Duckett

Ben Stokes has called for the public and the media to show “empathy” towards his embattled England players. It comes as their Ashes campaign threatens to fully unravel in response to a guaranteed series defeat and allegations of excessive drinking during a mid-tour break in Noosa.

Sitting 3-0 down going into the Boxing Day Test, England have been hit by reports that their downtime in between the defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide was akin to a “stag do”. The emergence of footage appearing to show Ben Duckett drunk and slurring his words on a night out has heightened things.

The video, taken by an English traveller called “Sam” and posted on social media, has not cost Duckett his place albeit England have made changes to their XI for the fourth Test. Jofra Archer’s tour is over with a side strain, Ollie Pope has been dropped, with Jacob Bethell and Gus Atkinson coming in.
