Predicted teams: Desperate Rabbitohs ask NRL for exemption amid crisis as Lomax case lingers over blockbuster

South Sydney is desperate for the NRL to sign off an exemption for talented youngster Ashton Ward to play in round one as the club faces a halfback crisis.

Meanwhile a legal dispute between Melbourne and Parramatta has left gun centre-winger Zac Lomax in limbo days out from the two clubs clashing on the field.

Here are the predicted teams for the rest of round one, after the Knights, Cowboys, Bulldogs and Dragons kicked the season off in Las Vegas.

South Sydney will apply for an NRL exemption for rising halfback Ashton Ward to play in round one amid an early play making shortage, before sitting down for extension talks with one of the pre-season’s most impressive youngsters.

As a revitalised Cody Walker spoke on Friday of “feeling like a burden” to his teammates throughout two years of repeated soft-tissue injuries, the Rabbitohs will weather all-too familiar upheaval to start 2026.

South Sydney might need exemption to break NRL rule amid suspension and injury dramas

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are reportedly considering applying for an exemption from the NRL for young halfback Ashton Ward to potentially play in Round 1, amid suspension and injury dramas for Wayne Bennett's side. With first-choice halfback Jamie Humphreys suspended until Round 3 for a hip-drop tackle last season, it was expected that Jonah Glover would be in the No.7 jersey.

But Glover broke his jaw in the Charity Shield against the Dragons, and will be out for an extended period. The Rabbitohs also have Jayden Sullivan, but he's battling an infection and might not be available for Round 1 either.

That means Ward is next in line, and the 22-year-old played well against the Dragons and Manly in the pre-season. But there's a major stumbling block that would prevent the Bunnies from picking Ward against the Dolphins in their season opener.

Kraken in desperate need of a superstar

Among the teams that are in the thick of the playoff race, one team is putting itself in position for the postseason, despite not having a big-name star.

The Seattle Kraken are currently hanging onto the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Yet, they are doing it without a marquee player who is feared by opponents. Forward Jordan Eberle has been having a good year, as has the likes of Matty Beniers and Chandler Stephenson, but the team has relied on great goaltending and solid defense to win.

While that might be enough to get them to the postseason, Seattle needs a little bit more firepower upfront if they want to compete with the upper echelon of the West.

    Trade Deadline Primer: Seattle Kraken

With the Olympic break now over, the trade deadline is almost a week away. Where does each team stand, and what moves should they be looking to make? We continue our look around the league with teams in the fight for a playoff spot, next up are the Kraken.

Coming into the season, expectations weren’t particularly high for Seattle.  They were coming off missing the playoffs and didn’t do much to shake up their roster.  However, a significant improvement defensively under new head coach Lane Lambert has them squarely in the race for a playoff spot.  But with some prominent veterans on expiring contracts, will they run the risk of letting them walk in free agency to bolster their playoff hopes or weaken those postseason odds to ensure they get a good return for some of those players?

Kraken Notebook – Olympic reactions, Grubauer returns, looming roster crunch

It’s been a nice break, but the Seattle Kraken have wrapped up a week of practice and are flying to Dallas on Monday to prepare for their first game since a critical 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 4. That victory put Seattle into third place in the Pacific Division heading into the break. Now, with the team marching toward a return to game action at the Stars on Wednesday, our coverage here at Sound Of Hockey is ramping back up as well.

The last week had almost “mini training camp” vibes, as Seattle’s players came back together at Kraken Community Iceplex and worked their way back toward game shape after nearly three weeks off. Those vibes, by the way, are very good, with the team in a playoff position and saying all the right things about being ready to compete for Seattle’s second postseason berth in franchise history.

Tsiounis: “The mindset is about embracing the opportunity ahead”

Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says the Reds are focused on clarity, intensity, and connection as they prepare to face Perth Glory in Ninja A-League Round 8 on Sunday night.

After a disrupted fortnight marked by illness and a postponed fixture, Tsiounis believes the playing group is trending in the right direction. Several players have returned to training and the squad is embracing the challenge of an away trip to Western Australia as an opportunity to continue building on its identity and processes.

Tsiounis on the health of the squad and influenza update…“The health of our playing group has been the priority. We’ve had a number of players affected by influenza A over the past week, which understandably disrupted continuity. The positive is that the group is trending in the right direction and several players have returned to full training, others are reintegrating gradually, and we’re managing loads carefully. We’ll continue to assess day-by-day, but overall the squad is in a much healthier place than it was recently.”

Andrioli: “We need to be more ruthless and more desperate for points."

Adelaide United Head Coach Airton Andrioli says the Reds are determined to respond on the pitch when they travel west to face Perth Glory on Saturday night, with the focus firmly on translating performances into points.

Speaking ahead of Isuzu UTE A-League Round 9, Andrioli acknowledged recent frustrations but stressed belief remains strong within the group.

Andrioli on covering Bart Vriends’ injury“Unfortunately Bart picked up an injury in the last game, which affected the way we had to adjust our game plan. We’ve worked on that this week and have a plan ready to go. Now we just have to deal with the situation and trust the players we have available.”
