Tasmania is prepared to put forward a seven-year deal to Beau McCreery

TASMANIA has made Collingwood midfielder Beau McCreery a serious target for its list build as the Devils hit the market.

AFL.com.au can reveal McCreery, who turned 25 this week, has been identified as a real player of interest for the Devils with their suite of list concessions soon to come into effect.

It is understood the Devils would be prepared to put forward a deal up to seven years to lure McCreery as a prominent signing, at a rate of around $1 million a season.

Last year, there were 58 players in the AFL who were paid at least $1 million, with that number set to increase again this year and be closer to 75 players by the end of 2027 when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement ends.

Geelong and Brisbane stars in play as Tassie make call on signing Nick Daicos

The Tasmania Devils have reportedly ruled out pursuing AFL players who are under contract, meaning the likes of Nick Daicos, Sam Darcy and Harry Sheezel are all out of play. But big-name stars like Logan Morris from Brisbane, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera from St Kilda and Jeremy Cameron from Geelong could be on the table.

The Devils will enter the AFL competition in 2028 and would love a big fish signing like Gold Coast got with Gary Ablett. Collingwood star Daicos has been a constant source of speculation and rumours over a potential move to Tassie, and the man himself hasn't categorically ruled it out.

Tasmania Devils pledge to embrace historic VFL outing

On the ESPN Footy Podcast, Jake Michaels says Opening Round has caused too many issues and needs to be scrapped, after more negative feedback from coaches. (4:40)

Those are the words of Tasmania Devils VFL vice-captain Jye Menzie and coach Jeromey Webberley ahead of the club's inaugural outing on Saturday.

Three years after being granted a licence for AFL entry in 2028, the Devils will run out in front of an 11,000-strong capacity North Hobart Oval crowd against Coburg.

The clash is viewed as the first step in a crucial building process for the top league.

"This is one of the biggest moments in my footy journey," Webberley, who played 16 games for Richmond, said.

NEWARK, N.J. — Jack Hughes returned to the New Jersey Devils' lineup just more than five weeks after having finger surgery and scored the home team's only goal against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.

Hughes received a loud ovation when he skated out for warmups, then scored his 11th goal of the season at 8:51 of the first period. That gave the Devils a 1-0 lead and brought more sustained cheers as Hughes raced in celebration to center ice where he was mobbed by teammates.

Devils’ Luke Hughes may have spilled details on Jack Hughes’ timeline

On Tuesday, Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said that, while injured star Jack Hughes is making progress, he’s still “not close to joining the group.”

During an interview on the TNT pregame show ahead of the Devils’ matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights, Luke said Jack “should be back pretty soon” when asked to give an update on his older brother.

This lines up with a Tuesday report from TSN that said “Jack Hughes is not that far behind, he’s likely going to return earlier than expected.”

On Monday, a Devils fan page posted on X (formerly Twitter) an image of Hughes skating with a stick on the Prudential Center ice. A team source confirmed to NJ Advance Media that Hughes is, in fact, back to skating with a stick — which is a very positive sign considering his injury.
