‘I’m gonna die of this’: Socceroos icon reveals devastating diagnosis
Socceroos legend Paul Wade has revealed he’s been diagnosed with probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
The 64-year-old, who captained Australia’s national men’s team and played 84 games in the coveted strip, released a statement through the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday.

“Football gave me so much. It gave me a life, a career, incredible experiences and the privilege of representing Australia,” he said.
“But I also must be honest about the challenges I now face and the uncertainty that comes with living with a neurodegenerative condition.

Wade says the neurodegenerative brain disease linked to repeated impacts to the head, which can only be confirmed after death, was first suspected in 2024.
The 64-year-old hopes sharing his experience will raise awareness about concussion and brain health.

In a statement put out by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday, Wade said he was diagnosed in late 2024 with a suspected case of the disease after experiencing neurological symptoms.

For as long as he can remember, former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has had a gift.
When he was 11 years old, newly arrived in Australia from England, he realised he could head a football harder, cleaner and more accurately than the other kids he would play with.
“Goalkeepers always kicked the ball into the air back then. Nobody threw it out,” he said.
“And because I was in midfield, I was probably one of the very few that was willing to head it. Right from the start, I knew I could head a ball – even if it was on the top of my head, where it hurt.
