Centrelink pensioner reveals sad diet change in $630 struggle: 'Poor man's food'

More older Australians are having to stay in the workforce for longer than planned as cost of living concerns force them to push back retirement. It's a trend that is seeing more workers either missing out on a comfortable retirement or sacrificing their golden years.

Em Farr, 59, relies on a modest fixed income and says it's become increasingly impossible in the past year to live like she is used to. "I've really, really had to tighten everything, which I've never had to do in my whole life," she told Yahoo Finance.

Due to a medical condition she will rely on Centrelink in the years ahead, with little ability to work. But Farr thinks she will still need to find another source of income to give her some much-needed breathing room.

Retirement system ‘unfit’ as Australians live, work longer

Australia’s retirement system is failing to meet the expectations of people who are now living and working longer because it was built on assumptions from the 20th century, new research has warned, as the program faces rising pressure from an ageing population and piling public debt.

While the system ranks among the world’s best, behind only Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark, Natixis Investment Managers’ latest study revealed 76% of Australians believe it is failing to keep pace with the needs that come with increasing life expectancy and longer working lives.

Prepared in collaboration with CoreData Research, Natixis said the research assessed retirement security across 44 countries using 18 indicators spanning finances in retirement, material wellbeing, health and quality of life.

Dumpster diving: In case you missed it, there’s a court case going on involving Woolworths and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. As Guardian Australia reported on Tuesday, the trial’s second week heard evidence that “the supermarket broke its own rules intended to prevent pricing manipulation”, as the grocery giant’s commercial pricing manager acknowledged under cross-examination.

That hearing was marked by a mega-dump of documents from the case posted to the Federal Court’s website. Sensing there may be truffles in there, Cochon went digging.

From cereal to clothing, see how the price of everyday items has changed

The cost of most everyday items is up. Here's by how much.

If it feels like (almost) everything is getting more expensive, that's because it is.

The impact of the Iran war is seeping through the economy, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers saying Australians are already paying a "hefty price" for the conflict.

This week, headline inflation jumped to 4.6 per cent. That's the highest it's been since September 2023, when the nation's economy was rebounding after the COVID-19 pandemic. And it raises the chances of more interest rate rises.

Below, we've tracked exactly what's going on with prices, from beef and books to furniture and insurance.

Another RBA rate rise won’t fix inflation – it will just smash households already hit by soaring fuel costs | Greg Jericho

The latest ABS consumer price index figures show just how pointless hiking interest rates would be at dealing with inflation. But raising rates is baked into the Reserve Bank’s DNA

With the release of the March inflation figures on Tuesday showing a big jump, the likelihood of a rate rise next week has become all but certain. Admittedly it was all but certain before the release of the figures, because the Reserve Bank is determined to smash households even though the cause of inflation is overwhelmingly due to international events.

A Fasting-Style Diet Seems to Result in Dynamic Changes to Human Brains

Scientists looking to tackle our ongoing obesity crisis have made an important discovery: Intermittent calorie restriction leads to significant changes both in the gut and the brain, which may open up new options for maintaining a healthy weight.

Researchers from China studied 25 volunteers classed as obese over a period of 62 days, during which they took part in an intermittent energy restriction (IER) program – a regime that involves careful control of calorie intake and relative fasting on some days.

Not only did the participants in the study lose weight – 7.6 kilograms (16.8 pounds) or 7.8 percent of their body weight on average – there was also evidence of shifts in the activity of obesity-related regions of the brain, and in the makeup of gut bacteria.
