Near 300km/h disaster after baffling act as Piastri fastest in mega Aus GP statement

Oscar Piastri has sent a statement on the first day of the F1 season, going fastest overall as teammate and world champion Lando Norris struggled at the Australian Grand Prix.

Both McLarens found themselves among the many strugglers early on Friday at Albert Park, as the new regulations caused reliability concerns for some and slowed the progress of others.

Disaster in north-west Queensland not over yet, more rain forecast for tropical coast

Pilots are taking to the skies in outback Queensland to shift cattle to higher ground, drop fodder and assess damage.

There is potential for isolated heavy falls in already flooded catchments in the north west, and more rain is forecast for the coast around Townsville.

The system in the north west is weakening and moving south. The Bureau of Meteorology says the system on the coast should shift offshore early next week.

Ringer Jessica Bridges turns on the TV at night to fall asleep so she does not have to listen to the rain.

"There's a lot of anxiety and big emotions in a lot of people's households," Ms Bridges said.
