    Daniel Turpin named as diver killed in WA shark attack

    The family of a 35-year-old man who died after being bitten by a shark off WA's southern coast yesterday has described his deep respect for the ocean while thanking those who came to his aid.

    Daniel Turpin had been spearfishing with family near Michaelmas Island, off the tourist town of Albany, when he was attacked about 11:20am local time.

    He was met by paramedics after being raced back to shore but could not be revived.

    In a statement, his family said he was "an adored husband, son, brother and uncle who had a lifelong love and deep respect for the ocean".

    Rescue diver dies during search for bodies of Italians who drowned in Maldives caves

    A rescue diver has died while searching for the bodies of four Italians who died in a scuba-diving accident in the Maldives.

    Staff Sgt Mohamed Mahdhee was taken to hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries, a government spokesman told the BBC on Saturday.

    Five Italians died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of around 50m (164ft) on Thursday. So far, the body of one of them is thought to have been recovered, in a cave at a depth of around 60m (197ft).

    The incident is believed to be the worst single diving accident in the tiny Indian Ocean nation, a popular tourist destination because of its string of coral islands.

    A Maldivian military diver has died during a high-risk operation to recover the bodies of four of the Italian scuba divers who drowned while exploring a deep underwater cave in the Maldives.

    The diver suffered underwater decompression sickness after searching for the bodies of the Italians who, according to Italy’s foreign ministry, had “apparently died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 metres (164ft)”.

    Mohamed Hussain Shareef, the Maldives presidential spokesperson, said that Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian national defence force, died of the sickness after being transferred to a hospital in the capital, Male.

    Rescue diver dies during search for bodies of Italian divers killed in the Maldives

    Male, Maldives: A Maldivian military diver has died while searching for the bodies of four Italian divers believed to be deep inside an underwater cave.

    The group of five Italian divers is believed to have died while exploring a cave at a depth of about 50 metres off the island of Alimathaa in Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, according to Italy’s Foreign Ministry. The body of one diver has been recovered.

    Maldives Presidential Spokesman Mohammed Hussain Shareef said that Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian National Defense Force, died of underwater decompression sickness after being transferred to a hospital in the capital on Saturday.
