Melania documentary struggles in UK cinemas as Vue admits sales are ‘soft’

Only one ticket sold for premiere of film about US first lady at Vue’s flagship London branch as insiders question launch strategy

As film exhibitor strategies go, counter-programming is one of the most reliable. It worked for The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia!, released in the US on the same day in 2008, as well as for Dunkirk and Girls Trip in 2017. In 2023, Barbie and Oppenheimer leveraged the tactic to the tune of $2.5bn in combined box office takings.

This week we could see another example as Amazon releases its authorised documentary about Melania Trump in more than 100 UK cinemas. There it will compete against an already-eclectic slate of releases including the Jason Statham action film Shelter, the ape horror Primate, Bradley Cooper’s comedy-drama Is This Thing On? and Richard Linklater’s Jean-Luc Godard fictionalisation Nouvelle Vague.

How once-exiled filmmaker Brett Ratner staged a Hollywood comeback with ‘Melania’

This is read by an automated voice. Please report any issues or inconsistencies here.

In late 2024, shortly after her husband, Donald Trump, was reelected as the 47th president of the United States, Melania Trump saw an opportunity: a documentary centered on her life.

The film, a follow-up to her eponymous memoir, would offer a window into the first lady’s private, sphinx-like world, in contrast to that of her bombastic, spotlight-seeking husband.

To direct the film, a fly-on-the-wall chronicle of the 20 days leading up to the inauguration, Melania turned to an unlikely choice: Brett Ratner, who only a few years earlier had been all but banished from Hollywood.

Amazon pumped millions into ‘Melania’. Ticket sales are soft

New York | President Donald Trump can command the world’s attention with a single post on social media. Yet, a new documentary film about first lady Melania Trump is struggling to fill theatres.

Boxoffice.com, a market researcher, projects $US1 million ($1.4 million) to $US2 million in opening weekend ticket sales for Melania in the United States. Ticketing websites show plenty of seats available for the January 30 debut and the days ahead. NRG, another forecaster, sees about $US5 million, according to the news site Puck.

GASLIT Documentary Featuring Jane Fonda To Make World Premiere at Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 5th

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 20, 2026) – Greenpeace USA today announced the upcoming release of GASLIT, a new documentary featuring Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda, set to premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 5, 2026.

In GASLIT, Fonda embarks on a road trip through Texas oil fields and Gulf Coast communities, meeting the people on the frontlines of the United States’ fossil fuel expansion. Since 2023, the U.S. has become the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and oil and gas companies are simultaneously fueling a massive boom in plastics production, doubling down on petrochemicals to secure their long-term future. GASLIT also features award-winning actor Connie Britton, and multi-platinum, Grammy Award-nominated producer/ songwriter/ performer Maggie Rogers joining forces with Fonda to highlight the dire nature of environmental injustice.

Jane Fonda, 88, turns heads with ageless look in powerful TV appearance

Jane Fonda looked far younger than her 88 years during an appearance on Wednesday's episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she discussed the importance of political activism.

The octogenarian sat opposite the show's host, Stephen Colbert, in a long-sleeved black shirt with the word "Resist" printed across the chest in sparkling font, pointing to her long history of activism. She wore black trousers and gold earrings to complete the look, and her gray hair fell in tight curls.

Jane is particularly passionate about climate justice, racial equality, and rights for women, LGBTQIA+ people and Indigenous communities, and wore the shirt as a reference to her recent work in restarting the Committee for the First Amendment.

Jane Fonda Champions Gulf Coast In Gaslit Battle

Jane Fonda, the legendary Oscar-winning actress and activist, is once again stepping into the spotlight—this time not for a film role, but for her unwavering commitment to environmental and social justice. As she nears her 89th birthday, Fonda is leading Gulf Coast communities in a high-stakes battle against the expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, a struggle captured in the new documentary Gaslit. Produced by Greenpeace USA and directed by Katie Camosy, the film is set to make its world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 5, 2026, according to Filmogaz.com.

Fonda’s activism is anything but performative. Her journey through the Gulf Coast, documented in Gaslit, reveals the deep health and environmental consequences of LNG production for local communities. The stakes are high: an analysis conducted by the Sierra Club and Greenpeace USA, as reported by Filmogaz.com, found that existing LNG terminals in the United States are responsible for approximately 60 premature deaths every year, with associated healthcare costs nearing $957 million. Should proposed expansions move forward, those numbers could rise dramatically—to an estimated 149 premature deaths and $2.33 billion in health expenses annually.
