Dogs can distinguish between emotions in a human face, study shows

BERLIN, Aug 11 (Reuters) – A peek inside dogs' brains revealed man's best friend can distinguish emotions in people's faces, ‌researchers at the University of Vienna have found, providing ‌what they said was the first ever evidence of such an ability.

In the study, researchers used machine learning to analyse brain scans of 12 dogs as the animals viewed images of human faces displaying different emotions, the university said in a press release on Tuesday.

Researchers found that ‌brain regions linked to higher cognitive functions and reward processing — the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus — were activated only by images of happy strangers.

If you’ve ever suspected your dog can read your mind—sussing out through some canine intuition when you’re happy, sad, scared, or cross—you’re half right. Many dogs can do exactly that, but it’s not mind-reading that’s involved: it’s face-reading. That’s the word from a new study in the journal iScience, in which researchers not only established dogs’ ability to discern human moods by examining our facial expressions, but also pinpointed the spots in the brain where that processing takes place. They did this by scanning canine brains with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Dogs, Cats still the frontrunners, but Daicos joins Pies’ chase for Butters

Collingwood and Richmond have both met with Port Adelaide midfielder Zak Butters, with the Magpies using their champion Nick Daicos as part of their in-person pitch to the game’s most-accomplished free agent.

The Magpies and Tigers – both viewed as trailing the Western Bulldogs, in particular, and Geelong, in the race for Butters – have nonetheless held face-to-face meetings with the Port Adelaide superstar, sources familiar with the meetings have confirmed.

Collingwood’s decision to make Daicos part of their pitch to Butters – the 23-year-old superstar was in the club’s meeting with Butters during this season – is a measure of Daicos’ value as a selling point to players, but also of Collingwood’s wish to support their young superstar with seasoned quality via free agency.

Sliding Doors is in full swing for 2026 … and Damo's got plenty on his mind

STRAP yourselves in, footy fans – Damian Barrett's Sliding Doors is back in full swing for 2026.

With the 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership Season underway, Damo's got plenty of thoughts about all 18 clubs – and the AFL.

So what is he saying about your team? What's he saying about the AFL? You can't say that, Damo, can you? Check it out below.

I have regularly questioned the Crows in the past two seasons …

I'm now nearly all-in on them. There is a very different feel to this club in 2026, and I really like it. A lot of work still to do. Even after their brilliant win on Thursday night against the Dogs, they are only 8-5. The Jordan Dawson story is compelling on every level. And the X-factor, Izak Rankine, to return. Look out.

Bulldogs sign breakout hooker on multi-year deal

The Canterbury Bulldogs have landed a quality signing with Freddy Lussick set for a move to Belmore on a two-year deal.

It will change the dynamic of the Bulldogs' spine as they seek an attacking option out of dummy half as shown with Lussick crossing for two tries on the weekend for the Penrith Panthers.

The 25-year-old, according to reports revealed by NewsCorp, will join the Bulldogs next year, with no chance of a transfer before the June 30 deadline.

Lussick has played 10 games for the Panthers this year at a consistent level, which is a solid bid in becoming a starting hooker at an NRL club..

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has backed two of his assistants as contenders for the vacant Carlton job while preparing for a clash with an unpredictable opponent.

For the second time in as many years, the Bulldogs will confront an opposition in their first game under a new caretaker coach, when Josh Fraser leads the Blues at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

'He's ready': Coach backed to take over from Michael Voss as Carlton boss

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has offered a ringing endorsement for assistant Hayden Skipworth to take over as Carton boss. The Blues are on the hunt for a new coach after Michael Voss stood down this week after four years in charge.

Premiership-winning coaches Adam Simpson, John Longmire and Paul Roos have all had their names thrown in the ring, while experienced pair Ken Hinkley and Nathan Buckley could also come into consideration. Carlton CEO Graham Wright said he wants to go through a formal process to find the Blues' next coach, which potentially gives untried assistants an edge in the race.

"Capable and ready as anyone": Western Bulldogs coach endorses pair of assistants for Carlton top job

Western Bulldogs assistants Brendon Lade and Daniel Pratt are more than "capable" to take on the senior coaching gig at Carlton, according to Luke Beveridge.

The Blues are on the search for another top dog after Michael Voss handed in his resignation earlier this week, and pundits scramble for the best live option.

Lade and Pratt are well-credentialed in the AFL landscape, and are among the names deemed candidates for the vacant role.

"Over the journey we've had assistants come and go," Beveridge said.

"When you consider Brendon Lade is right up there with doing all the yards. He's a big friendly giant. He's as capable and ready as anyone. Pratty is in the boat as well.

“He’s been able to deal with that and manage it a little bit … he’s pretty confident he should be available,” Beveridge said.
