Don Nelson, legendary coach and five-time NBA champion as player, dies at 86

Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history who won five championships as a player with the Boston Celtics, died on Sunday. He was 86.

“On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family,” a statement from his family read. “Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories.”

Nelson is one of two coaches in NBA history to have at least 250 wins with three different franchises – Milwaukee , Dallas and Golden State – also serving as general manager for all three franchises. He was a three-time coach of the year and made the playoffs 18 times in 31 seasons. He went to the conference finals three times with the Bucks and once with the Mavericks, although he never won an NBA title as a coach.

They feature a lot in the pool and the track, as you'd expect, but you'll catch them on NRL and NRLW players too from time to time, thanks to the recent inclusion of rugby sevens.

Petria Thomas got them on her right ankle 30 years ago and, after Glasgow, she's had the 2026 Commonwealth Games logo inked on the other side.

"The Commonwealth Games has been such a big part of my life, as big a part as the Olympics, so I thought why not?" the eight-time Olympic medallist said.

"To stand alone in history is unbelievable. Four years ago I needed one more, then Emma (McKeon, Australian swimmer) came past me and I thought, 'Damn, now I need three more'. … I was nervous. I was shaking on the blocks … emotionally it's probably the hardest thing.

'I don't really want to be famous': How Osaka has stayed grounded through career

WASHINGTON — When Naomi Osaka won the 2018 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, she felt nothing could top it.

The 6-3, 6-2 March 2018 win over Daria Kasatkina marked the then 20-year-old Osaka's first career WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz title and was a breakthrough win that put her name on notice.

"When I won Indian Wells, I for sure thought 'Wow, life can't get any crazier than this' because my mom was working all the time, and I rarely saw her, and she was able to retire because of that," Osaka said during her media day Sunday at the Mubadala DC Open. "I felt like that was peak.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has told a business breakfast in Perth she believes migration from radical Islamic countries should be banned.

She angrily denied suggestions from the event's host this amounted to a "version" of the White Australia policy.

About 80 protesters gathered outside the event, chanting phrases such as "migrants are welcome, racists are not".

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has angrily denied suggestions her strident opposition to migration by anyone from "radical Islamic countries" amounts to a version of the White Australia policy.

Ms Hanson was speaking at a Perth leadership breakfast hosted by The West Australian newspaper after returning from the UK, where she had blamed the end of the White Australia policy for migration issues in Australia during an interview with far-right activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson.

A dark chapter of Australia's past is resurfacing in immigration politics

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has sparked a new discussion about the resurgence of a 'White Australia' policy — a controversial series of laws that discriminated against non-European migrants.

Hanson, during an appearance on a podcast with the British far-right, anti-immigration activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson last week, suggested that scrapping the White Australia policy was the root cause of apparent migration issues in Australia.

"It started in 1973 with Gough Whitlam, so they opened up and got rid of the White Australia policy, then they started bringing in the different migrants," she said.

Flip-flops have officially ditched their bad reputation, especially in New York. Many locals had sworn off them until the last few years, when they came roaring back into fashion's good graces thanks to Scandi girls and a few elevated styles from the likes of The Row and Toteme. That's not to say, though, that the flat shoe style is for everyone. Whether they're trendy or not, some people still refuse to wear flip-flops, preferring other flat sandals, and that's their right. Fortunately, there are plenty of chic flip-flop alternatives, and one particular style is a beloved choice among women in their 30s and 40s, from Jennifer Lawrence to Meghan Markle.

8 Flat Leather Sandals That Are the Elegant and Chic Alternative to Flip-Flops

For years, we thought the only truly essential summer shoe was the flip-flop. Minimalist, simple, and incredibly easy to pair with anything. Yet, season after season, fashion is shifting its focus to another star one that’s just as essential but decidedly more refined – the flat leather slipper. It embodies the same philosophy of lightness, the same desire to leave the foot almost completely exposed, but with a quiet elegance that makes it perfect even for city life.

Its strength lies precisely in its simplicity. An ultra-thin sole strictly ultra-flat and a strap that gently wraps around the foot. No superfluous details, no complex construction just clean lines, high-quality leathers, and perfect proportions. It’s one of those shoes that demonstrate how luxury today is increasingly defined by subtlety rather than excess.

12 designer women’s sandals to invest in for 2026

For all the excitement of a new summer wardrobe, it’s often the sandals that do the heavy lifting. Unlike trainers, they have nowhere to hide: the wrong pair will be revealed within minutes of trekking along hot cobblestones or a dusty beach path.

Invest in the right pair, however, and they’ll carry you from city pavements to seaside swims with far more mileage than any trend-led purchase. But how to choose? Every detail matters: the quality of the leather, the shape of the footbed, the elegance and placement of the straps. The best designer sandals don’t scream for attention; they quietly elevate everything else you’re wearing, making even the simplest white dress or pair of jeans feel considered.

Don't rely on AI for personal finance advice, study finds

When it comes to personal finance, artificial intelligence gives advice that can be inaccurate or demographically biased, and can range widely depending on the particular program that consumers use, according to a new academic research study.

The research — which studied seven "widely available" generative AI platforms — found "significant variation" in how GenAI answered prompts about emergency savings, asset allocation and withdrawals from a retirement portfolio.

Researchers examined free-access versions of ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Gemini, Meta AI and Perplexity.

"GenAI-driven responses may sound confident but can still be incomplete, misleading, or incorrect," according to the paper, published last month in the Journal of Financial Planning and authored by finance professors at the University of Georgia and University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy.

Ball don’t lie: How the World Cup match ball helped deny Croatia a dramatic equalizer vs. Portuga…

Explore the latest developments concerning Ball don't lie:.

Why offside rules denied goals for Portugal, Croatia in World Cup

Portugal and Croatia each had goals called off because of offside rules on Thursday night in Toronto in the Round of 32.

The game could've had a lot more goals, as it turns out — including a potential tying goal right at the death that was called off for Croatia.

It was scoreless in the first half, but the ball kept finding the back of the net in the second half.

These were all the relatively simple offside variety: When the ball is played, an attacker cannot be past the last defender.

Another look at Cristiano Ronaldo being ruled offside on what would have been the equalizer for Portugal pic.twitter.com/Pw4BB39pbR

Why was Croatia’s 103rd-minute equalizer against Portugal ruled out?

Croatia were seconds away from exiting the World Cup at the round of 32 stage when Josko Gvardiol tapped home to equalize in the 103rd minute against Portugal.

What seemed like a lifeline to keep Luka Modric’s final run on the sport’s biggest stage of all was rescinded in a matter of moments. Mario Pasalic was judged to have been in an offside position before finding the Manchester City defender.

It was 2-1, then 2-2, and then 2-1. All in a few cruel minutes for Croatia. Gonçalo Ramos’ late header after a first knockout goal for Cristiano Ronaldo was enough to seal the comeback victory in the tournament’s most dramatic game yet.

‘Don’t pay Gatto, don’t get access’: Leaks expose companies with gangland figure on payroll

A two-year attempted clean-up of Victoria’s Big Build has failed to stop large sums of money flowing from state and federally funded projects to the underworld. Payments are still being made this year.

An explosive leak from an associate of Mick Gatto exposes his secret empire, revealing a sprawling and continuing money trail from Big Build subcontractors to the gangland veteran and his associates. More than a dozen subcontractors on Labor projects have placed Gatto on their payroll.

The revelations come amid a separate leak revealing principal contractors confidentially documented state government directions to cave in to the CFMEU’s lawless takeover of the Big Build. The CFMEU’s Big Build takeover became entrenched while now Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan was minister responsible for the government’s signature $100 billion infrastructure program.

From big house to Big Build: CFMEU chief’s courtroom plea for violent contractor exposed

The union boss greenlighted by the Victorian Labor government to wield huge control over the Big Build vouched in court for a major drug trafficker on two separate occasions before installing him at the helm of a major Big Build firm – only for the criminal to be busted and jailed again.

The support provided by the CFMEU’s now former boss on the Big Build, Joe Myles, to criminal Wayne “Junior” Carter has emerged as a case study of how criminals infiltrated Labor’s signature infrastructure scheme.

Queensland court records uncovered by this masthead reveal that on two occasions, in 2012 and then again in 2020, Myles provided court character references for Carter as the prolific drug trafficker prepared to be jailed for serious crimes, including an eight-year sentence for trafficking dangerous drugs.

‘Offensive and unlawful’: Big Build contractors slapped as ex-watchdogs back royal commission

Victoria’s top labour hire cop has launched an unprecedented attack on the state’s Big Build mega-contractors, saying they are the head of the rotting fish that is the state’s corruption-plagued construction sector and declaring that legal holes mean they get away with appalling wrongdoing.

Labour Hire Commissioner Steve Dargavel’s extraordinary comments came as two respected former top anti-corruption officials issued a damning joint assessment of Premier Jacinta Allan’s failure to clean up the infrastructure scheme she presided over for years as minister.

Former ombudsman Deborah Glass and ex-senior judge and former chief of the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission Robert Redlich said an urgent royal commission was the only remedy that would adequately confront corruption on the government’s signature $109 billion Big Build infrastructure program.
