    Chargers GM Joe Hortiz: 'Door is not closed' on bringing back WR Keenan Allen

    Wide receiver Keenan Allen has played 12 of his 13 NFL seasons for the Chargers.

    General manager Joe Hortiz won't rule out adding another to the tally.

    "Right now we're in a spot where we're looking at the roster and letting these young guys get a chance, but I've had some communication with Keenan's representation," Hortiz said Thursday on Up & Adams when asked about potentially bringing the wideout back. "We talk. Right now, our guys that we have here, we're letting them grow and develop, but nothing but love for Keenan. That door is not closed."

    The Chargers similarly left a light on for Allen last offseason, waiting until August to reunite with him on a one-year deal following his single-season hiatus with the Bears. Allen returned to the place he spent his first 11 NFL seasons and led the team with 81 receptions, which he turned into 777 yards and four touchdowns.

    Most of the Los Angeles Chargers' roster needs have already been filled this offseason. But Joe Hortiz has made clear there's still a path for veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen to be on the roster in 2026.

    Speaking on the Up & Adams show, Hortiz stated that there has been communication between the Chargers and Allen's representation.

    "Right now we're in a spot where we're looking at the roster and letting these young guys get a chance," Hortiz started. "But I've had some communication with Keenan's representation. And we talk." Joe Hortiz

    He also stated, in reference to Adams' allusion to the rumors surrounding Allen and the Kansas City Chiefs, that he "would not like to see him in the red".

    Labor's plan to overhaul the tax treatment of investments has set off a firestorm of discussion, with all sorts of competing claims about what it means for people in all sorts of different circumstances.

    The basic principle is simple. The government wants those who earn "capital gains" from the sale of investment properties, shares, or their own businesses to pay more tax.

    They argue that these forms of income are taxed too lightly compared to wages, mostly to the benefit of the wealthy, and that the consequences have been especially pronounced in the housing market, contributing to affordability woes for young people.

    Anthony Albanese will present controversial changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax to parliament on Thursday, pushing for speedy passage of the plans while flagging possible carve-outs for businesses beyond the startup sector.

    Labor’s pre-election promise of a $1,000 standard tax deduction will be included in the draft laws, along with the $250 “working Australians tax offset” announced in the budget.

    The prime minister wants the “core” elements of the plan through parliament by early July, setting up a challenge for the Coalition and One Nation, who would have to vote against the tax cuts if they choose to oppose the budget measures.

    “This,” says Fiona Copeman, the hub manager of the Malabar wastewater treatment plant, “is what you would call our four-bus area.”

    Copeman is gesturing to a model of the plant on a table inside the facility itself. She’s referring to a 300 cubic metre underground chamber that houses, as Guardian Australia revealed in January, a “fatberg the size of four buses that likely birthed poo balls that closed Sydney beaches”.

    Sydney-Wollongong commuters finally get start date for new intercity trains

    After a five-year delay, NSW’s multibillion-dollar fleet of new Mariyung trains will start carrying passengers on the South Coast rail line between Kiama and Sydney from next Tuesday, raising commuters’ hopes of more reliable and frequent services.

    The new intercity fleet will be progressively rolled out on the line over the next year, starting with seven trains of four and six carriages, before longer eight and 10-car sets enter service during peak periods.

    All 16 new trains to eventually be used on the line will terminate at Sydney’s Central Station – like those used on the Blue Mountains and Newcastle lines – partly because 10-carriage trains are too long to stop at platforms on the underground line between Redfern and Bondi Junction. The longest Mariyung trains also cannot be turned around at Bondi Junction.

    Mariyung Fleet: Long-awaited new trains to hit South Coast line on Tuesday

    The Mariyung Fleet will start carrying passengers on the South Coast line from Tuesday – five years after originally scheduled.

    The fleet was originally slated to be in service in 2021 but a range of issues including ordering more carriages, the need for infrastructure upgrades and conflict with rail unions pushed back the delivery date.

    The first Mariyung passenger service will leave Kiama Station at 7.56am on Tuesday, April 14, heading for Central Station.
