Live: ASX down despite bumper Woolies profit as traders increase rate rise bets

Australia's largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has seen its profit surge by 18 per cent in the last financial year to $1.138 billion. Despite this, July inflation figures show annual price pressures easing across the economy.

Meanwhile, one of Australia's largest private credit investment managers has limited redemptions on its $2.3 billion secured property loan fund.

Follow the day's financial news and insights from our specialist business reporters on our live blog.

It released its half-year profit results this morning, with first half revenue, recurring revenue, and gross profit margin all up.

But its underlying EBITDA was -$12.4 million (-256% on the previous corresponding period), with lower gross margin and increased fixed base for scaled operations, and increased wages and sales and marketing costs, and it reported a statutory loss after tax of $32.2 million (compared with $2.1 million profit after tax in PCP), after individually significant items of $15 million.

The Aussie dollar just did something it hasn’t managed for months

The Aussie dollar surged and share market stuttered following the release of inflation figures in a clear sign traders are genuinely entertaining the chance of another interest rate hike.

Wednesday’s data put inflation for the 12 months to July at 3.5 per cent, and the all-important trimmed mean – the RBA’s preferred underlying measure – at 3.6 per cent.

While the headline figure was a 0.3 per cent slowdown from June and the trimmed mean was steady, both remain well beyond the 2-3 per cent target, and both were higher than market forecasts of 3.2-3.3 and 3.5 per cent respectively.

Hot CPI a kick in the guts for ailing economy: Betashares

The Australian sharemarket erased gains on Wednesday after inflation came in stronger than expected, keeping the risk of further interest rate increases by the Reserve Bank of Australia in play.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index was down by 0.1 per cent, or 13 points, to 9151.60 at 2.03pm AEST, after being up by more than 0.6 per cent before the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the July price data.

While inflation slowed from 3.8 per cent in June to 3.5 per cent last month, it was above the 3.3 per cent forecast by economists. Trimmed mean – the RBA’s preferred gauge – held at 3.6 per cent.

For many millennials, Ben McKenzie is still best known for his role as a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks who was adopted by the wealthy Cohen family.

The now 47-year-old actor noted as much in the US Congress, when he appeared before its Senate committee on banking four years ago.

"You can also call me Ryan Atwood from The OC," he quipped.

Ben McKenzie releases documentary criticizing cryptocurrencies

American actor Ben McKenzie, known for the series The O.C. and Gotham, has released the documentary Everyone Is Lying To You For Money, in which he criticizes the cryptocurrency industry. The film is a continuation of a book about cryptocurrencies that he wrote with journalist Jacob Silverman, and tells the story of events in the crypto market in 2022 and the collapse of the FTX exchange.

As ABC News Australia reports, McKenzie has a degree in economics and became interested in cryptocurrencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to him, amid low interest rates and fears of currency depreciation, retail investors increasingly turned to bitcoin.

Trump’s Crypto Corruption Is Off The Charts — Mehdi and Ben McKenzie Explore Why

Back in April, Mehdi was joined on ‘We’re Not Kidding’ by actor, author, and now documentary filmmaker Ben McKenzie to talk about Ben’s new film which investigates the fraudulent and predatory cryptocurrency industry, ‘Everyone Is Lying to You For Money’.

The documentary is finally available to stream online, but for a limited time only from Aug. 22 – Sept. 6. You can click the button below to stream ‘Everyone Is Lying to You For Money’ now.

You can also revisit Mehdi’s conversation with Ben from earlier this year. They unpack the documentary’s globetrotting story — from Miami, to El Salvador, to London — as Ben follows the (figurative) money, including his now famous interview with convicted crypto grifter Sam Bankman-Fried. Ben also explains what exactly cryptocurrency is and uncovers why its evangelists want you to buy it so badly.

For several hours on Saturday, both the Coles website and app displayed a message advising “we’re currently offline – but not for long”. The website and app came back online, before the website went down again during the afternoon. It was back up at about 4pm AEST.

It came after a post by an Australian Reddit account on Friday about a discount on 24-packs of Jack Daniel’s & Cola 330ml bottles sold via Coles by subsidiary Liquorland which were marked down from $130 to $27, a saving of $103, or just under 80%.

The apparent error was spotted by a Reddit user about 1am on Saturday, with cases of alcohol normally worth more than $100 appearing online for as little as $27.

“Found this. I’m assuming it’s a mistake?! Go get it before it runs out (or they notice) I guess,” the user wrote.

Coles Online Faces Alcohol Ordering Glitch Ahead of Earnings Report Following Weekly A$965 Million Drop

Coles Group Limited ASX:COL is set for a digital performance test ahead of Tuesday’s results, as an alcohol pricing issue disrupted online purchases following a 3.1% drop in shares last week.

The drop wiped out about A$965 million in equity value. Coles ended Friday at A$22.82, marking its fourth session of losses in the last five.

The technical issue emerged following the close of ASX trading. As a result, no stock prices have reacted so far. The initial market response will be seen on Monday, a day ahead of FY26 results.

Online prices for certain 24-packs plunged by close to 80%. A Jack Daniel’s pack was reduced to A$27, down from A$130. A Smirnoff case decreased to A$29, previously A$202.

Is Pokémon GO down? Thousands report ‘network error 2’ amid widespread outages | Hindustan Times

Thousands of players of the wildly popular Pokémon game, Pokémon GO, are reporting network error with the game on Friday evening.

According to Down Detector, a platform that tracks internet outages based on users' reports, showed that over 6000 Pokémon Go players are reporting issues with the app. At 6:20pm EDT, more than 13,000 were reporting issues with the game. As of 8:30pm EDT, more than 7000 are still reporting issues, Down Detector shows.

Most users say that they are getting a "Network Error 2" issue as the servers fails to connect each time they try to launch the game. Is Pokemon Go Down: Tens Of Thousands Report Outage As Login And GPS Errors Hit Players

Pokemon Go experienced a widespread outage on Friday, with more than 20,000 users reporting problems on Downdetector, as players across the country found themselves locked out of the popular augmented-reality mobile game.

More than 20,000 users had reported issues with the platform as of 3.27 pm PT, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collecting status reports from multiple sources, with most users reporting problems specifically with the game’s launch. Downdetector’s own tracking showed user reports surging around 6.15 pm ET, according to the outage-monitoring service’s post on social media platform X, which asked players, “How is it affecting you?”

Reports from affected players point to two distinct technical failures rather than a single fault. Most players have been hit with a “no network” error where the game fails to load past the login screen, while in other cases, even when the game does load, a “GPS error” pops up and prevents the game from functioning normally. According to tracking data, Pokemon Go has been down since around 2.30 pm PT, with frustrated players taking to social media platforms including Reddit and X to voice their complaints about the disruption.

‘I’m OK’: Daley hoses down health concerns after concerning report

Laurie Daley has hosed down concerns about his health and says he will make an announcement on his coaching future in due course.

A News Corp report on Tuesday night claimed health issues will be a factor in the New South Wales legend stepping down from his role as Blues coach, following a State of Origin series win earlier this month.

Fellow league legend Paul Vautin dropped a bombshell on a podcast on Monday when he revealed Daley has already told him he plans to quit the job.

Daley, 56, refused to confirm as much on Wednesday morning. He also moved to allay any concerns about his wellbeing.

Two frontrunners have emerged to replace Laurie Daley as NSW coach, amid suggestions the Blues legend will walk away from the top job in the coming days.
