Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen has shot down a proposal by Australia’s energy market rulemaker to lift power bill charges for solar and battery owners to pay for the maintenance of poles and wires networks that they increasingly do not use.
The change, floated by the Australian Energy Market Commission in December, is designed to overhaul the way the electricity networks recover their costs through consumer bills, as solar, batteries and EVs change the way power is used in the grid.

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) says its proposed network pricing reforms could cut electricity costs and deliver up to $6 billion in savings across 15 years — but modelling suggests those savings won’t be shared evenly, with some solar owners potentially worse off.
The modelling projects savings of $40 to $80 per household per year on electricity bills by 2040. It estimates some families would be much better off, saving up to $740 a year by 2040, with two-thirds of households that are unable to have solar or batteries benefiting.
The impact is slightly negative however for solar and battery owners. The payback period for solar extends from approximately 4.4 to 4.7 years, while solar and batteries go from 4.6 to 5.0 years, although home batteries could be better rewarded for easing network pressure during peak periods.

Users are having problems using Instagram April 9. According to Downdetector, the problem popped up shortly before 8 a.m. After 8:30 a.m. EST, there were nearly 200 complaints.
About half of the reports made to Downdetector were about posting on the social media site.
Other concerns were 27 percent couldn't use the app and 18 percent couldn't see their timeline.
There is no timetable for when the issues will be resolved.
Update (April 23, 20:44 IST): The issue seems to have been fixed, as we are seeing reports from users who confirm everything is working as expected now.
A widespread bug is currently hiding fresh Instagram Stories from the top feed bar, leaving users to think their posts have completely vanished.
The glitch started hitting a huge chunk of accounts at least a couple of hours ago. If you post a story right now, it likely will not show up in the normal carousel for your followers.

An Aussie landlord who owns her own home, along with two investment properties, has shared her dilemma over not being able to afford dental treatment. The woman said she shops at Kmart to keep costs down and doesn't have a fancy car, but there was “nothing left” in her and her husband’s budget.
The woman, Sue, wrote to the Barefoot Investor Scott Pape for help, sharing that she needed dental treatment that would cost upwards of $30,000. But she didn’t know where she would find the money.
The woman is a qualified nurse so understands the impact bad teeth has on health, not to mention how “embarrassing, and at times painful” it was.
Facing a choice that many would consider unexpected for a property owner, a 43-year-old nurse and her lawyer husband revealed they cannot afford more than $30, 000 worth of dental treatment despite owning a home and two investment properties — a situation that prompted them to write to scott pape for guidance. “I am in tears as I write this, ” she said, describing being “asset rich, cash poor, mortgaged to the hilt” as childcare and mortgage costs squeeze their budget.
The couple say their two investment properties cover their own costs but provide little extra cash. Both investments have “gone up significantly in value, ” yet they are unable to refinance with their bank and do not want to sell because they fear losing half the gain to capital gains tax. Their household outgoings are substantial: a primary mortgage of $7, 000 a month and $3, 000 a month on childcare, while their superannuation balance stands at $416, 000. The nurse described the dental problem as “embarrassing, and at times painful, ” and contemplated dipping into retirement savings or traveling to Thailand for cheaper treatment.

A screengrab from Downdetector showed the sharp spike in problems reported by Instagram users.
Downdetector also showed that most people faced issues with the app, while some also had troubles with the server connection and posting or publishing. As per the outage map, shared by the site, places like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York were among those grappling with outage issues.
