The Mole: Rugby league world rallying around 'real Manly legend' after being rushed to hospital

The Manly Sea Eagles are rallying around one of the greatest players to represent the club in champion fullback Graham Eadie, who is suffering from serious health issues.

'Wombat', as he is affectionately known, was rushed to hospital earlier this week after suffering two suspected seizures.

Eadie is a member of a large community of former Sydney rugby league stars living on the Gold Coast.

NRL community throws their support behind hospitalised Sea Eagles legend

The NRL community has thrown its support behind Manly Sea Eagles legend, who was hospitalised this week after suffering seizures.

One of the Sea Eagles' greatest fullbacks, who played 237 games in maroon and white, picking up four titles on the Northern Beaches.

Eadie also represented NSW on 14 occasions in State of Origin and 20 Test honours for the Australian Kangaroos.
Former speedster and friend of Eadie, Larry Corowa, told the Daily Telegraph an update on the situation and relayed the continued support he has been receiving since the incident.
“Graham has had his health issues over the last couple of years, and we – all the boys – are right behind him,” Corowa said.

WAFL Match Report: Eagles finish pre-season with win over Sharks

West Coast prevails in a closely fought contest with East Fremantle

West Coast closed out their WAFL pre-season campaign in style on Sunday, finishing strongly to claim a 17‑point win over East Fremantle at Mineral Resources Park.

Fielding their strongest WAFL side bolstered by 14 AFL-listed players including Tom Cole, Ryan Maric and new recruits Fin Macrae and Harry Schoenberg, the Eagles produced an energetic and encouraging performance ahead of the official season commencement.

The home side burst out of the gates early, led by excellent defensive pressure and lively ruck work from Bailey Williams and Harry Barnett. Williams set the tone with a strong early mark, and after the Sharks opened their account, Macrae fired back with a brilliant running goal from the centre square to restore West Coast’s advantage.

What caught the eye: Pre-season week two

Sullivan Logistics WAFL and WAFLW teams took another step towards the 2026 season in the second week of official practice matches. Here’s what caught the eye:

It’s only pre-season, but things have started well for Subiaco under returning premiership mentor Jarrad Schofield as they plot a rise up the ladder.

The new-look Lions have won two from two so far, knocking off preliminary finallists Claremont at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday after beating Swan Districts the previous week.

Captain Greg Clark led from the front, Taj Schofield continued his strong pre-season, uncapped teenage ruckman Frazer Rickson went a step closer to securing an opening-round debut and two-time Bernie Naylor Medal winner Ben Sokol made it five goals in two appearances as his WAFL comeback tour gains momentum.

Samuel Ogunleye and Colin Udoh debate Mohamed Salah's future with Egypt after their semifinal loss to Senegal. (2:57)

There is nothing more disappointing for two giants of African football, with 10 titles between them, than having to contest the bronze medal game when the final was within touching distance.

But that is the case for Nigeria and Egypt, two behemoths of the continental game, fresh off painful defeats to Morocco and Senegal respectively. They will clash in Casablanca on Saturday afternoon.

Of the two, Nigeria will feel most hard done by after their defeat on penalties against the hosts, considering their performances at the competition prior to that game, where they actually did really well.

CAN 2025: All the third-place playoffs in the tournament’s history

Egypt and Nigeria are set to clash this Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 16:00 GMT in the third-place playoff of CAN 2025.

    Nigeria holds the record for the most third-place finishes—eight times in 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2019. The Super Eagles have never lost a third-place match.

Live! Egypt vs Nigeria for Third Place at AFCON 2025

Sometimes, the third-place playoff in a tournament can be a low-key affair between two teams either celebrating an unexpected run in the tournament, or with sides desperately wanting to be on the plane home.

Saturday’s clash between Egypt and Nigeria live on beIN SPORTS feels different. It has the sense of a match between two giants of African football that have some unfinished business to work through.

Although Egypt was eliminated by Senegal by just the single goal and a moment of magic from Sadio Mané, the Pharaohs will be feeling frustrated that they never came close to fulfilling their potential in the match.

49ers race out to 7-0 lead in Philly

Quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson have the 49ers up early in Philadelphia.

Purdy connected with Robinson on the second offensive play of the game and Robinson turned a modest gain into a 61-yard pickup after the catch. Purdy went back to Robinson a few plays later and their two-yard touchdown put the 49ers up 7-0 with just over three minutes off the clock in the first quarter.

Purdy also hit running back Christian McCaffrey with an 11-yard pass on the way to the end zone.

Robinson only had 22 catches in the regular season, but the 49ers are missing Ricky Pearsall Sunday and could use more from him over the rest of the afternoon.

NFL playoff picture update: If the Eagles beat the 49ers, they will play the Bears in Chicago

Given the results of Saturday’s two NFL playoff games, we now know that the Philadelphia Eagles will be traveling to Chicago to take on the Bears in the Divisional Round.

That is, if the Eagles are first able to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Wild Card game at Lincoln Financial Field.

It looked like the Eagles might get a desirable result with the Carolina Panthers coming close to staging an upset over the Los Angeles Rams. But Matthew Stafford led the Rams on a clutch drive to escape Charlotte with a win, setting the stage for the Eagles to either 1) host the Rams or 2) play the Bears in Chicago if they get past the 49ers.

Roob's Observations: Will the Eagles finally let Jalen Hurts take off and run?

On the latest Takeoff podcast, John Clark is joined by Hall of Fame quarterback, Kurt Warner to break down the Eagles matchup with the 49ers.

Will Jalen Hurts use his legs more than during the regular season? Will Dallas Goedert have another big postseason game? Will the offensive line regain its form after a week off? Can we trust Jake Elliott to make a high-leverage kick?

So many questions and we take a stab at some answers in a wild-card weekend Roob’s Random Eagles Observations!

    1. One thing that could really help bring the offense to life as the Eagles head into the postseason is Jalen Hurts using his legs. He’s still a weapon as a runner, even though he ran less than ever this year. But it’s been a big piece of his postseason success over the years, and it’s time for the Eagles to spring him on the 49ers and the rest of their postseason opponents as long as they’re alive. In his first four playoff runs, Hurts has run 75 times for 384 yards, not including kneel downs. That’s 38 yards per game and 5.1 per carry. During the regular season this year, he was at 26 rushing yards per game (not including kneel downs) and 4.6 per carry. Hurts’s first four years he never averaged below 8.5 carries per game. This year he was at 5.6. So he’s still good at it, he just doesn’t do it as much as he used to. I don’t know if the Eagles were intentionally holding Hurts back as a runner this year to try and keep him healthy, but he is healthy and it’s time to unleash him. When Hurts gets out in the open field, he’s still dangerous and the Eagles could sure use that extra dimension as they try to revive the offense against the 49ers.
