Earnings ‘divergence’ deepens between China’s ‘Big Three’ and Cathay Pacific: HSBC

A report from the UK-based bank comes as airlines prepare to report their half-year financial results.

An HSBC Research report has flagged a widening “divergence” between the earnings of China’s three largest carriers and Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong, amid elevated jet fuel prices during the summer peak period.

The 10 July report also notes a “slow” start to the summer travel season for China’s ‘Big Three’ and Cathay, which began 1 July and ends 31 August. It cites booking data showing a decline in the average daily flights for the week of 1-7 July (down 2.6%), while passenger volumes were down about 1.4% during the week.

HONG KONG – A Cathay Pacific passenger jet en route from Hong Kong to London temporarily lost communication with local air traffic control over Romania on Saturday, prompting a NATO alert.

The incident unfolded as Flight CX257, an Airbus A350, was crossing Romanian airspace, according to Hungarian Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi. In response, neighboring Hungary scrambled fighter jets under NATO air policing protocols to issue a visual warning.

Cathay Pacific confirms London-bound flight briefly lost contact; NATO alert triggered

Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific has confirmed that a London-bound flight briefly lost contact with air traffic control on Saturday, an incident that triggered a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alert.

Cathay Pacific said in an emailed reply to HKFP on Wednesday that the CX257 flight from Hong Kong to London experienced a “temporary loss of communication” with local air traffic control on July 4.

As a result, there was a “subsequent interception by the authorities in accordance with internationally recognised protocols,” the flag carrier said.

“Communications were restored and the flight continued to Heathrow as planned,” Cathay Pacific said, adding that no one’s safety was compromised and that the flight adhered to authorised routing at all times.

Nvidia to report Q1 earnings, as chip stocks soar on AI strength

AI heavyweight Nvidia (NVDA) will report its first quarter results on May 20, in what is easily one of the most anticipated announcements of the earnings season.

Nvidia’s results come as CEO Jensen Huang travels to China with President Trump for his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, helping to push the company’s stock to all-time highs and sending its market capitalization to $5.5 trillion.

Investors are watching the action in China to see if Trump and Xi can reach an agreement on shipping Nvidia’s chips to China. Nvidia has said that while the US government has granted the company a license to ship its H200 processors to the country, China hasn’t granted Nvidia an import license.

Nvidia stock hits an all-time high on new AI bullishness from Wall Street analysts

The top US AI chipmaker saw shares surge as much as 3% to a high of $227.84 before paring the gain slightly to close at $225.83. The rally pushed its market capitalization above $5.5 trillion.

Analysts on Wednesday debuted a fresh batch of bullish outlooks for the company as well as the wider AI trade through the rest of this decade. The optimism around Nvidia stock is also building ahead of the company's earnings report on May 20.

Nvidia's fresh record comes as the chipmaker's CEO Jensen Huang joins President Trump in Beijing as part of the US delegation at the US-China summit.

Analysts at Bank of America and Wells Fargo boosted their price targets for the stock ahead of Nvidia's fiscal first quarter results next Wednesday.
