Gu Ailing says it is "sweet" that JD Vance thinks she should be competing for the United States after the American vice-president called her out for representing China.

Gu, who also goes by the anglicised Eileen Gu, was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University.

"I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope that they want to compete with the United States of America," Vance said this week when asked about Gu during a Fox News interview.

Livigno: Chinese megastar Eileen Gu says she feels like a political target of the American right wing because they “hate China” – and not necessarily because they wish she was competing for the US at the Winter Olympics.

Gu’s contentious decision to represent China, despite being born and raised in California, has become a huge conservative talking point following her success at Milano Cortina 2026, where she is on track to podium in all three of her events for the second Games in a row.

An outlier lies among the list of Forbes’ 2025 world’s highest-paid female athletes.

Tennis star Coco Gauff tops the list, earning an estimated $33 million, followed by her peers Aryna Sabalenka ($30m) and Iga Swiatek ($25.1m) but then appears Eileen Gu. The leading trio are household sporting names, freestyle skier Gu is not, but her earnings? $23.1m.

Every year since the 22-year-old won two gold medals and silver at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the big air, halfpipe and slopestyle — making her the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing aged 18 — she has ranked in the top five highest-paid female athletes.

Gu shakes off fall to qualify for Olympic slopestyle final

LIVIGNO, Italy — Eileen Gu skied backwards out of the slopestyle starting gate, jumped onto the first rail, did a 270-degree spin and landed on the snow. Then, she fell.

For the next hour, as she prepared for her second, final and now excruciatingly pressure-packed chance to keep all her Olympic goals alive, she kept telling herself, "there's no time anymore, like, this is it."

One of the shining stars of these Winter Games stared down the specter of being eliminated in her very first event Saturday, delivering a clutch performance in a qualifying session that produced way more drama than expected.

Skier Eileen Gu sports a personalized, detail-studded ski suit at Milano Cortina Olympics

When not risking her neck performing acrobatic tricks on skis, Eileen Gu loves to strut down runways and pose for magazine covers as a model.

So, it was no surprise she wore the most fashionable ski suit at the Winter Olympics.

Gu qualified for the women's slopestyle final on Saturday wearing an outfit full of details inspired by her Chinese heritage and her own personal quirks.

The 22-year-old Gu jumped at the chance to talk about her suit after coming off the course.

"Oh my gosh, I've been waiting for this moment, fit check!" she said before launching into a breakdown of her getup.
