Idris Elba: 'Don't try to make James Bond woke'

British actor Sir Idris Elba has said that James Bond shouldn't become "woke" and that some audiences would not accept a black male playing 007.

Sir Idris, who has previously said that he was "never in the race" to play the famous spy despite years of rumours, told GQ that he was nevertheless flattered by the suggestion.

He said that Bond "was written how he was written for a reason", but added he was "complimented" by being linked to the role.

"In realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that," Sir Idris said. "Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period."

Idris Elba says audiences would never accept a black actor playing James Bond: ‘That’s not what they like in their culture’

The star of Luther played down rumours that he was lined up to take over as 007, adding that he’s against making the character ‘woke’

Idris Elba has refuted rumours that he was seriously in contention to play James Bond after Daniel Craig’s departure in 2021.

The actor, 53, who is currently promoting new film Masters of the Universe, told British GQ the conversation linking him to the role was “never legit”.

“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” he said. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Idris Elba is "not in the race" to play James Bond – and never was.

The 53-year-old actor was tipped to replace Daniel Craig as 007 for years, but Elba has insisted he was never a serious candidate for the role.

Amazon/MGM Studios recently announced the search for the next James Bond is under way.

"My name's not getting thrown out, no way," the Luther star told People.

Idris Elba takes name out of hat for James Bond casting

Idris Elba has claimed that he's never been considered for the role of James Bond. The British star has countered years of rumours that suggest the opposite.

"My name's not getting thrown out, no way," Elba told People magazine in an interview published on Saturday,

"They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can't wait, it's going to be amazing," he added.

"I'm honestly not in the race ever. I wasn't in the race in the first place."

Speculation surrounding the Luther star's potential casting as the British spy dates back to at least 2011.
