With former Rep. Mike Rogers unopposed in the Republican primary, all attention has been on a bruising Democratic primary battle between physician Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens. Stevens has rallied the Washington and Michigan Democratic establishments to her side, while El-Sayed has captured energy and attention from progressive luminaries. The winner will face a sprint to the general election while trying to repair any damage from the long, hard-fought primary.

Ypsilanti, Michigan: Abdul El-Sayed takes the microphone, and the 100-or-so-strong crowd rises to their feet in applause. He leads them in a call-and-response of his election slogans. “Money out of …?” he yells. “Politics,” they respond. “Money in your …? Pocket. Medicare for …? All.”

It is not a glamorous setting. We are in a basement at the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, a small city between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Surrounding us is a collection of old-school firefighting vehicles and a 1913 Ford Model T repainted to look like one.

These are the unassuming rooms in which future leaders are made. In El-Sayed’s case, possibly an important leader. A doctor, unionist and Muslim, he is vying to become the Democratic candidate for the US Senate here in Michigan, a swing state that will decide the outcome of the midterms.

Fact-checking Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens' claims ahead of the Michigan Democratic Senate primary

Michigan Democrats will pick their nominee for the U.S. Senate on Aug. 4 in a battle dominated by views on U.S.-Israel relations and the Democratic Party's future.

The race between Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens has exposed intra-party rifts about whether Democrats should move further to the left in a battleground state Donald Trump won in 2016 and 2024. Criticizing U.S. aid to Israel, as El-Sayed has done, has become increasingly common in the Democratic base, and, in July, nearly half of House Democrats voted to cut off aid. (The vote failed because of Republican opposition.)

In a shocking incident from Chennai, a fan of TVK president Vijay attempted suicide following rumours that the actor's party would lose in the Tamil Nadu elections. The man, identified as Mahendran from Krishnagiri, tried to slit his throat.

Mahendran, a long-time Vijay fan, was rushed to a hospital immediately. He is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). According to his friends, Mahendran was very upset after exit polls showed the DMK leading.

Most recent exit pollshave predicted a strong performance for the DMK. They suggest that the DMK alliance, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, will retain power in the state. Agencies like People's Pulse and Chanakya have predicted a lead for the DMK. However, JVC Times Now has predicted a surprise win for the AIADMK-BJP alliance. Meanwhile, the Axis My India exit poll has given an edge to Vijay's TVK.

Tamil Nadu Results: Vijay's Fan Slits Throat Amid Rumours Of TVK Trailing

A 28-year-old man from Krishnagiri allegedly attempted suicide after hearing rumours about actor-turned-politician Vijay’s prospects in the ongoing Assembly elections, police said.

The man, identified as K Mahendran, is believed to be a supporter of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The incident took place shortly before the counting of votes began, a TOI report stated.

According to police officials, Mahendran was reportedly under severe emotional distress and slit his throat near his residence. Local residents who noticed the incident rushed to his aid and immediately took him to the Krishnagiri Government Medical College and Hospital.

He is currently undergoing intensive treatment, officials confirmed. Police said further details are being looked into.

Victorian MP quits, triggering by-election months out from state poll

Former Victorian Deputy Liberal leader Sam Groth will resign from state parliament. (ABC News)

Former deputy Liberal leader Sam Groth will resign from parliament next week, forcing a by-election in the seat of Nepean.

The first-term MP had already vowed to exit state politics at the November election, a decision he said he made after realising recent public pressure on his family had come from within his own party.

His imminent resignation will force voters in the Mornington Peninsula-based seat to the polls twice in less than a year — once for the by-election in the early half of this year and again in November for the state election.

Sam Groth to exit parliament early and spark costly byelection

Former deputy opposition leader Sam Groth will exit parliament next week and force his electorate to the polls just months before the state election.

Groth, a former professional tennis player in his first term of parliament, had previously announced his intention to retire from politics and not contest the November election.

However, his decision to vacate the seat of Nepean early will trigger a byelection in his Mornington Peninsula electorate in the coming months.

Groth, who was absent during question time on Wednesday afternoon when news of his resignation broke, said he was resigning to pursue other opportunities.
