Couple embrace $130,000 housing crisis solution sweeping Australia: 'Never again'

A couple have vowed to “never live in cities again” after building their own tiny home in regional Australia, despite not having any construction experience whatsoever.

Lizzie Villestas, 42, and David Menhennett, 56, moved from Hong Kong to Australia — where David was born — in 2021. They have now joined the scores of Aussies ditching city life for simple, stress-free living.

The couple are encouraging others to take the plunge and make the move as the ‘Australian dream’ of a multi-bed detached home in the suburbs becomes increasingly unattainable.

“It’s the only way forward for younger generations,” David told Yahoo News.

Determined to leave behind the “high-level stress” city living brings, the married couple made plans to relocate to Tasmania, but ultimately decided on southeast Victoria.

Prefabricated homes: the $150k fix to Australia's housing crisis?

Widow Christine Szajer dug herself out of grief and financial difficulties after the passing of her husband, managing to secure a roof over her head with a tiny, prefabricated home.

It's something experts say could solve Australia's housing crisis, if governments thought more about the process and time it took to produce new housing.

After the passing of her beloved husband to a rare cancer six years ago, Ms Szajer opted to sell the four-bedroom home and downsize, leasing a block of land in South Australia's Barossa Valley and gained a new lease on life.

Housing affordability was a key issue in the May 12 federal budget with changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax but some Australians say a simple solution could be found in prefabricated houses.

World Urban Forum 13 Concludes in Baku with Focus on Housing, Resilience, and Urban Inclusion

The thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) concludes today, May 22, in Baku, Azerbaijan, after six days of discussions, exhibitions, and international exchanges centered on the theme "Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities." Co-organized by UN-Habitat and the Government of Azerbaijan, the forum marked the first time the event was held in the Caucasus region, bringing together policymakers, architects, urban planners, academics, and civil society representatives from around the world.

Established in 2001 by UN-Habitat, the World Urban Forum serves as the United Nations' premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. Hosted at the Baku Olympic Stadium from May 17 to 22, this year's edition focused on the global housing crisis, informal settlements, climate resilience, and equitable urban development, while advancing conversations around the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Amanda Anisimova is preparing to break new ground at Melbourne Park.

Three times, the American has advanced as far as the round of 16 at the year’s first Grand Slam. Three times, she has been denied by heralded foes.

In 2019, Anisimova’s run was thwarted by Petra Kvitova, who finished as tournament runner-up. In 2022 and 2024, it was eventual champions Ash Barty and Aryna Sabalenka respectively.

Back to Blonde: Amanda Anisimova heads to Australian Open high on confidence

The American hopes her hair color is the only change we’ll see after a breakout 2025 season.

MELBOURNE, Australia—After a year like Amanda Anisimova’s, few would be eager to change a thing.

The 24-year-old is fresh off a breakthrough season, one in which she captured two WTA 1000 titles and reached two Grand Slam finals, and arrives Down Under at a career-high ranking of No. 4.

When you’re that close to the top, it’s all about small tweaks, and Anisimova opted to make just one before the first major of the season.

“Well, it's like pretty personal,” Anisimova joked of her decision to go back to blonde after a winning season as a brunette.
