    Honda’s updated engine debuts in Aston Martin filming day

    After Aston Martin’s chassis upgrade, power unit partners Honda are planning to follow with a revised engine.

    Honda’s new-specification power unit has run on-track for the first time during an Aston Martin filming day in Hungary, in preparation for its planned race debut at the Dutch Grand Prix.

    It is due to complement a major car upgrade package introduced by Aston Martin at last weekend’s Budapest round, with the AMR26 absorbing no fewer than 16 developments.

    Those changes helped Fernando Alonso secure the squad’s first Q2 appearance of the season, before the Spaniard followed team mate Lance Stroll home in respective P13 and P14 finishes.

    Aston Martin gained notable lap time at the Hungarian Grand Prix after introducing a significant upgrade package.

    Fernando Alonso has insisted Aston Martin is doing everything it can to support Honda as the Japanese manufacturer works to improve its power unit.

    Honda's new F1 engine to make debut next week

    Honda’s new Formula 1 engine for Aston Martin will make its track debut during a filming day in Hungary on Wednesday.

    The first phase of the package of changes that Aston Martin and Honda hope will rescue their awful 2026 season arrived for the Hungarian Grand Prix, in the form of a substantial set of chassis upgrades.

    That allowed Fernando Alonso to reach Q2 and qualify a season-high 16th.

    In the race, Lance Stroll and Alonso – who have recently struggled to even run with the all-new Cadillac team – finished 13th and 14th, beating an Alpine and both Haas and Williams cars.

    McLaren gets latest Mercedes F1 engine two races after works team

    Both McLaren drivers will get the latest specification of Mercedes Formula 1 engine at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, two rounds after it debuted aboard the factory Mercedes cars.

    Kimi Antonelli and George Russell received a new specification of Mercedes power unit in Austria, which featured a number of reliability improvements. Its other customers Alpine and Williams ran the new version at Silverstone one week later.

    McLaren did not swap to it at the Red Bull Ring or Silverstone because it still had mileage to use on its existing power units, having already cycled through many components because of reliability issues in 2026 so far – including the two distinct battery issues that prevented Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from starting the Chinese GP in March.

    McLaren to debut Mercedes power unit upgrade at Spa

    Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will use the revised specification at Spa-Francorchamps, which was developed as a reliability upgrade following a series of failures earlier in the season.

    George Russell and Kimi Antonelli debuted the engine in the factory Mercedes cars in Austria before Alpine and Williams adopted it at Silverstone, leaving McLaren as the final Mercedes-powered customer to make the switch.

    McLaren’s delay was not due to a lack of access to the new engine, with chief executive Zak Brown explaining before the British Grand Prix that the team still had usable mileage remaining on its existing pool of power units.

    'Be grown-up': Guenther Steiner's brutal message as McLaren told to stop blaming Mercedes

    Reigning world champion McLaren has been outclassed by the Mercedes F1 team at the start of the new regulations and trails the Brackley squad by 179 points to 333.

    A qualifying trick used by Mercedes and Red Bull Formula 1 teams for a speed boost at the end of a lap has been banned by the FIA, The Race can reveal.

    Those manufacturers had found a clever way to bypass mandated power reduction demands that need to be followed as cars burn through their battery energy on the straights.

    Rather than running in a 'ramp down' rate on the charge to the timing line at the end of a qualifying lap – where power normally needs to be reduced by 50kW every second to avoid a sudden drop off – they were able to run at maximum deployment for as long as they could.

    Formula 1 teams will be dealt with harshly if they continue to push the limits in qualifying after a new FIA ruling.

    Formula 1 teams that continue to use now-outlawed engine trickery could be dealt with severely, Crash.net has learned.

    Following the opening three races of the season, the FIA and F1 are reviewing the current regulations and are making tweaks to improve the spectacle.

    But one tweak has focused on closing a loophole which gave an unintended competitive advantage in qualifying.

    While regulations dictate that a driver will lose electrical power gradually in order to prevent a sudden loss of speed, Mercedes and Red Bull-powered teams had been circumventing this by entering shutdown mode, which keeps the power at a higher level for longer, before locking the car from using its MGU-K for a minute.
