$28 billion and counting: Europe tallies the cost of another energy crisis

The European Union has unveiled a raft of planned emergency measures to cushion its economy from soaring energy costs.

The proposals, announced Wednesday, underscore the economic damage the Iran war is inflicting on Europe, which only recently emerged from the energy crunch precipitated by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Some industries are already fighting for survival.

“For the second time in less than five years, Europeans are paying the price of Europe’s dependency on imported fossil fuels,” the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said in a statement detailing the measures.

The bloc has spent an additional €24 billion ($28 billion) on energy imports since the start of the war due to higher prices – or more than $587 million a day – “without receiving a single extra molecule of energy,” it added.

EU plans to cut electricity taxes to shield households from Iran war energy crisis

Brussels will relax state aid rules to allow member countries to offer ‘targeted and temporary’ support

The EU will cut electricity taxes and provide consumers with fresh incentives to ditch fuel-burning cars and boilers, the European Commission has announced, as the energy crisis from the Iran war speeds a shift to a clean economy.

The plan, which foresees tweaking rules so that electricity is taxed less than oil and gas, aims to bring down bills while encouraging the move away from polluting devices that prolong reliance on foreign fuels.

The commission said it would adopt temporary state aid rules to allow member countries to directly shield consumers and businesses from high energy prices, but it warned that any support must be “targeted, timely and temporary”.

How to read the European Commission’s Iran crisis energy emergency plan

EU countries should coordinate measures to offset rising energy prices from the Iran conflict, while using the crisis to drive longer-term change

A plan published on 22 April by the European Commission to deal with the energy shock triggered by the war in Iran and related blockade of the Strait of Hormuz seeks to turn the crisis into a catalyst for long-term change. The plan, known as AccelerateEU, pushes the European Union to go further in reducing its high dependence on volatile fossil-fuel imports, while transitioning to an energy system based on clean, homegrown sources.

In particular, AccelerateEU shows that the European Commission wants to use the Iran crisis to foster electrification in the context of the share of electricity in final EU energy consumption being stuck at around 20% for a decade. Importantly, the Commission’s analysis of the risks of the EU’s dependence on fossil fuels is ultimately correct. This contrasts with statements since the start of the Iran crisis from some national governments – including Germany – which seem to advocate continued use of fossil fuels and a slowdown in the transition.

Europe could face fuel shortage by April as Iran throttles supplies, says Shell boss | Energy industry

Wael Sawan warns of pressure on diesel and petrol if strait of Hormuz does not reopen to oil and gas shipping

Europe could face a shortage of energy and fuel as soon as next month without a reopening of the strait of Hormuz, Shell’s chief executive has said.

The boss of Europe’s biggest oil company said it was working with governments to help them address the oil and gas supply crisis, which has already led to energy rationing in Asian countries.

Oil prices dipped back to about $100 a barrel on Wednesday from highs of about $114 at the start of the week, on the back of reports that the White House had sent a 15-point peace plan to Iran’s leaders.

The chief executive of Shell has warned that Europe could experience energy shortages before the end of April. He indicated that jet fuel supply has already tightened, with a potential diesel squeeze and tighter gasoline supply to follow as the continent approaches its peak summer demand period.

The executive explained that supply pressures initially affected South Asia before moving to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and increasingly into Europe. He emphasized that energy security is a fundamental component of national security. Europe's current difficulty stems from a lack of preparedness for global developments, leaving the region in a reactive position rather than building long-term resilience.

ESA analysing fireball over Europe on 8 March 2026

At approximately 18:55 CET (17:55 UTC) on Sunday 8 March 2026, a very bright fireball moving from the southwest to the northeast was observed by many people in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

The fireball glowed for approximately six seconds, leaving a visible trail in the sky before fracturing into pieces. The event was recorded by many dedicated meteor cameras, such as those of the European AllSky7 fireball network, as well as mobile phones and other cameras. Some observers report that the event was audible from the ground.

At least one house in the German town of Koblenz-Güls is reported to have been struck by small pieces of the resulting meteorites. There are no reports of physical injury.

ESA Investigating Fireball Over Europe After Meteorites Strike German Home

The European Space Agency said it is investigating a fireball that streaked across the skies of Europe on the weekend before reportedly punching a football-sized hole in the roof of a German home.

The fireball, which glowed for around six seconds just before 7 pm Central European time (18:00 GMT) on Sunday, was observed by people across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

The fireball broke up into small meteorites, some of which reportedly struck at least one house in the German town of Koblenz, the ESA said in a statement late Monday.

A meteorite punched a hole around the size of a football into the roof of a home in the city's Guels district, according to the German public broadcaster DW.

Sunday Morning's European Fireball Was Probably Only a Few Meters in Diameter

On Sunday March 8th, people in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands watched as a fireball crossed the sky. It travelled from the southwest to the northeast, flaming for several seconds. Dedicated meteor cameras, mobile phones, dashcams, and other cameras all captured the event. Some observers even heard the event from the ground. Fragments from the meteor struck homes and buildings in Germany.

The most recent fireball to capture international attention before this one was the Chelyabinsk Meteor in 2013. That was likely an asteroid that exploded in the air before it hit the ground. The ESA is analyzing the event, and they say that fireballs like this can happen from every few weeks to every few years.

Mikel Arteta said he believes Arsenal belong at Europe's top table, but urged his team to prove their Champions League credentials against Bayer Leverkusen.

Arteta has overseen the Gunners' first knockout stage win in 14 years and their first semifinal appearance in 16 years over the past two seasons.

Asked if Arsenal had established themselves alongside Europe's best, Arteta said: "I believe so. This is football and you have to show it tomorrow night.

Competitive balance across Europe’s leagues would be transformed with the adoption of a new model for distributing revenue from the Champions League and other Uefa club competitions, according to a proposal by the Union of European Clubs (UEC).

Clubs competing in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League benefit this season from a bumper €3.317bn (£2.87bn) prize pot, culled from annual €4.4bn revenue primarily generated by media rights sales. Only €308m of the latter figure is divided among clubs who did not reach those competitions, in the form of solidarity payments.

Donald Trump's escalating rhetoric on a US takeover of Greenland has dominated discussion at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

The US president said he was confident of a resolution that would make NATO "happy", but when he was asked how far he would go to acquire the Danish territory, would only say: "You'll find out."

Mr Trump is due to address the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, local time. European leaders will hold an "emergency summit" in Brussels the following day.

America's rattled European allies are debating how to stand up to Donald Trump after he escalated his threats to take over Greenland and pledged to punish its supporters with tariffs.
