Resident Evil Q&A: Director Zach Cregger shares inspirations and a new film teaser

Director and writer Zach Cregger discusses what makes a Resident Evil story tick.

A new teaser trailer has revealed the first terrifying look at Resident Evil, director and writer Zach Cregger’s ode to the beloved horror franchise. We had the chance to sit down with Cregger to dive into how he’s crafting an original story that stays true to the series.

PlayStation Blog: What is your earliest memory of Resident Evil as a series?

Zach Cregger: My earliest memory of Resident Evil had to be playing [Resident Evil] 2. I think I played 2 before I played 1, and I don’t think I played anything like it, it’s the first survival horror game that I remember playing. I definitely played it before Silent Hill, and I just loved this new mechanic of resource conservation. You had to be completely aware of how many bullets you had, and how many healing items you had. You’d make these tough decisions about – what am I going to carry with me? What am I going to leave behind? It was such a unique mechanic. And it felt for me, with all the Resident Evil games, or with most of them, some of them get a little too arcade-y for my taste, but I really like the survival horror mechanics of moving slow and with deliberation. That was something that was really important to me to bring into the movie.

‘Resident Evil’ Trailer: Zombie Video Game Movie Gets Horrifying New Take by ‘Weapons’ Director Zach Cregger

Sony has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “Resident Evil.” Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, “Resident Evil” is co-written by Shay Hatten and “Weapons” helmer Zach Cregger, who also serves as director.

The film does not feature established characters from the “Resident Evil” universe such as Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine, as Cregger aimed to create a new and original story. The plot will introduce a new protagonist—a courier delivering a package—who finds himself in the middle of a Raccoon City outbreak. The original “Resident Evil” was released as a PlayStation game in 1994, but was later made available on several different consoles. There have been more than a dozen sequels and remakes of the games, including this year’s “Resident Evil Requiem.”

The 'Resident Evil' Reboot May Finally Be The Franchise's First True Horror Attempt

The survival horror experience is being resurrected by a new horror darling.

While adaptation doesn’t necessarily justify or elevate a work of art, there’s perhaps no better testament to the persistence and cultural resonance of the Resident Evil franchise than the fact that Hollywood has already tried and failed to bring it to live-action three separate times. Paul W.S. Anderson, Andrew Dabb, and Johannes Roberts each inhabited the beloved zombie series in their own way, only to be rejected by critics and fans for a wide variety of reasons. Part of it stems from a refusal to provide a straightforward adaptation of the games’ story, which has pros and cons, but part of it is also the fact that none of the three tellings focused on the creeping dread and survivalist desperation that made the first few games so chilling.

Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story review – shall we all vow not to watch true-crime this twisted in 2026?

This terrifying documentary about the Utah life coach convicted of extreme child abuse feels supremely grubby. How about a new year’s resolution not to watch – or make – anything this grim ever again?

We are always aware, I think, of man’s inhumanity to man. The latest true-crime documentary from Netflix is here to remind you that this is an umbrella term. It is undoubtedly rarer, though precisely why is unclear, but women can inflict the most awful suffering too – and here, a pair of them do so on children.

Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story is the latest offering from Skye Borgman, who is the undisputed queen of the genre, specialising in high-end takes on the most extreme, the most only-in-America stories of depravity you could (not) hope to find. She made her name with 2017’s Abducted in Plain Sight, about the case of Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped not once but twice by Robert Berchtold, a close friend of the Brobergs and a sexual predator who effectively groomed the whole, spectacularly naive family. The Girl in the Picture, five years later, tells the story of a young woman known as Sharon Marshall, found after her death in a suspicious hit-and-run accident to have been living under multiple aliases as the kidnap and rape victim of a fugitive on the run from the FBI for decades. I Just Killed My Dad completed an unholy trinity of films from Borgman, with an examination of why 17-year-old Anthony Templet shot dead his apparently loving father and waited calmly outside for the police to arrest him. Spoiler alert: Templet’s father was nothing like the man he seemed.

Was Ruby Franke brainwashed?! New Netflix doc director dissects Jodi Hildebrandt's tactics

Vlogging and life coaching were lucrative businesses for Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt. The Utah women were admired, in demand and making a lot of money. But, it all unraveled when Ruby’s son showed up at a neighbor’s house asking them to call the police. He was emaciated and had tape on his wrists and ankles.

What investigators discovered was dark and twisted, and a stark contrast from the front the boy’s mom and her business partner portrayed online.

A new documentary on Netflix, Evil Influencer, delves into the story of Jodi Hildebrandt. In an interview with Investigative Reporter @AnneTEmerson, the director of the documentary, Skye Borgman, discusses Jodi’s past, her career as a therapist, her clients, the Church of Latter-Day Saints, and her psyche. Is it possible Jodi brainwashed Ruby?
