Expert unveils opportunity to unlock 13m empty bedrooms

While in the midst of a housing crisis, Australia has around 13 million empty bedrooms, prompting calls for a revolutionary “last homebuyer scheme” to help Boomers downsize and afford existing stock to the market.

In an upcoming episode of SBS Insight, Housing BOOMERS, host Kumi Taguchi explores the debate around downsizing in Australia.

Michael Blythe, former chief economist at the Commonwealth Bank is one of the experts who makes an appearance on the episode, where he spotlights the striking figures of empty bedrooms across Australia – space that exists but isn’t being used where it’s needed most.

With more than 37 years’ experience in economic policy and now economist-in-residence at Downsizer.com, Mr Blythe is exploring the idea of a “last homebuyer scheme” to make it easier for older Australians to downsize.

AFL 2026 predicted ladder part three: Brisbane’s best may be yet to come

Everything about the Lions suggests they have more to show, while Fremantle and Gold Coast are stacked with talent but don’t seem ready

Part one: Collingwood on a cliff edge as time waits for no one

“It’s definitely not ideal, is it?” Darcy Fogarty said in the days following Izak Rankine’s homophobic slur. And no, it wasn’t. It wasn’t ideal for his AFLW colleagues. It wasn’t ideal for the people running things. It wasn’t ideal for Rankine himself. And it wasn’t ideal for his team, who’d spilled into the rooms after the round 23 win over Collingwood on top of the footballing world. It was a party atmosphere that night, the celebration of a club that had secured a double chance, broken a hoodoo, and finally believed it belonged with the best. What could possibly go wrong?

Leading AI expert delays timeline for its possible destruction of humanity | AI (artificial intelligence)

Former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo says progress to AGI is ‘somewhat slower’ than first predicted

A leading artificial intelligence expert has rolled back his timeline for AI doom, saying it will take longer than he initially predicted for AI systems to be able to code autonomously and thus speed their own development toward superintelligence.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former employee of OpenAI, sparked an energetic debate in April by releasing AI 2027, a scenario that envisions unchecked AI development leading to the creation of a superintelligence, which – after outfoxing world leaders – destroys humanity.

The scenario rapidly won admirers and detractors. The US vice-president, JD Vance, appeared to reference AI 2027 in an interview last May when discussing the US’s artificial intelligence arms race with China. Gary Marcus, an emeritus professor of neuroscience at New York University, called the piece a “work of fiction” and various of its conclusions “pure science fiction mumbo jumbo”.

The Dangers of AI and Extreme Wealth Inequality

Rarely in politics do we see genuinely new big ideas; instead, we see old ideas repackaged and communicated through new media. However, new technology often has a dramatic impact. The most obvious examples: agriculture, the printing press, and the Industrial Revolution, each in its own way, rendered systems and old ideas obsolete.

So, it is with entrepreneur Oliver Libby’s new centrist treatise, Strong Floor No Ceiling: Building a New Foundation for the American Dream. Libby’s book (and its titular slogan) is the latest center-left argument making the same case: that policymakers need not curb extreme wealth so long as there is an adequate safety net to catch those who fall. This is a familiar neoliberal approach to tax and regulatory policy. At best, its adherents believe that some froth at the top of the economic chain is a small price to pay for the supposed economic dynamism that creates widespread growth in capitalist systems. Viewed cynically, it is a convenient politics for those solicitous of a particular cadre of big donors not explicitly aligned with the far right.

Expert Analysis: What each driver needs to do to win the championship

This is an exclusive pre-event Supercars.com column by championship-winning Race Engineer Scott Sinclair. Sinclair will preview and debrief each round of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship from his own perspective.

The 2025 Final Four are set, ready to fight for the championship at this weekend's bp Adelaide Grand Final. Let’s take a look at the four combatants and what they need to do in order to claim the championship trophy.

Broc Feeney undoubtedly goes into the weekend as the favourite. His form over the course of the season is second to none. He deservedly starts the Grand Final weekend with a 20-point margin over second-placed Chaz Mostert as a result of being the highest-ranked driver after Sandown. This 20-point buffer could prove vital given how closely Mostert and Feeney have raced throughout The Finals so far.

2025 Supercars Adelaide Grand Final – Schedule, how to watch, TV times, & more

The polarising format will pit Broc Feeney, Chaz Mostert, Will Brown, and Kai Allen against each other for the Repco Supercars Championship.

Feeney will have a small edge over Mostert, having left the Sandown 500 atop the standings.

Feeney will begin the weekend with 5050 points while Mostert has 5030 to his credit. Brown begins on 5015 points while Allen begins on 5000 points.

Three races will decide the champion – the first, a 100km sprint on Friday afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will each feature a 250km contest.

Come Sunday afternoon, the driver who has amassed the most points will be crowned champion.

“Like, obviously, it’s been an awesome season. But this Finals series is something else. There’s been a lot happening in the first couple of rounds.
